They're not quite at that stage here yet. People are vaguely adhering to the public nuisance law when on the street. Plenty of places to go though.

I know bars and restaurants are liable for penalties if they let people smoke ciggies (well most bars and restaurants ) so I assume the same applies if they let someone spark up a spliff.

My bar is open so no problems with smoking but ever the A/C bars round here have open smoking policies.

Obviously we have no tourists here so the police really don't give a fuck about what the farang community are up to and don't get involved unless there are complaints.

Of course, common sense prevails, as do manners.

Thai Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told members of parliament today (Thursday) that liberalisation of cannabis remains the government’s policy, but there are controls to prevent its non-medical use.
Responding to an interpellation, raised by Supachai Jaisamut, a member of the Bhumjaithai Party, Anutin, who is also leader of the party, insisted that the Bill to decriminalise the plant and to treat cannabis as a controlled herb was not decided upon by the Public Health Ministry alone, but that it has been through the screening process using scientific evidence confirming its merits and demerits.
He also said that the Bill does not belong to the Bhumjaithai Party, but was endorsed by the House Scrutiny Committee, which contains representation from government and opposition parties.
Anutin explained that the Public Health Ministry has issued an edict, already in force, to control the non-medical use of cannabis, such bans on smoking it or its extracts in public, sale through vending machines, the sale of cannabis to minors and pregnant women and tight control on cannabis buds.
He warned that restoring cannabis to the Category 5 list of narcotics would be a lost opportunity to turn the plant into an economic crop, which would generate income for rural communities and the development of the crop as medicinal or health products.
The Cannabis Bill has passed its first reading in the House and has been endorsed by the House Scrutiny Committee. It is due to be debated in the House for its second and final readings in this parliamentary session.
The Bill is, however, expected to face strong resistance from opposition parties and the Democrat Party, one of the coalition partners.

Cannabis shops and cafes in Thailand are no longer allowed to let customers smoke the plant recreationally on the premises anymore. On-site consumption of cannabis for medical purposes is still permitted if the cannabis is sold by a medical practitioner.

The announcement was made in the Royal Gazette yesterday and is effective immediately.

Had a walk around Patong last night.

It’s like the whole place is on fire and weed is the fuel.

You don't smell it often here, but you do see the odd farang nipping down dark alleys.

    Or that might be Buttplug.

As the Thai Health Minister made clear in post 79, the government is happy to legislate the caveats for the use of medically prescribed cannabis.
While he made clear that poor rural areas could benefit from this, he neglected to mention that any taxable income from such enterprises would accrue to the government. He also neglected to define clearly that any legislation should be in the remit of the RTP to enforce such rules!

    Bottom line: Government makes rules.
    Government collects taxes.
    RTP liable for enforcement.

In the real world, we both understand how this works.

Here in Isaan, ganja has been grown and sold for decades before it was decriminalized.
Every few years the cops would make a bust just to let folks know it is illegal. Otherwise, cops would be quite happy to participate in the ganja profit share coop.

So I got a plant, just because I could, saw it at a garden shop.
it was tiny when I got it.
Weed in Thailand. Is this article correct?-weed-jpg
I don't smoke, not because I have anything against it but because I did not like the experience.
Like most of you I smoked here and there in my youth, and had not for many many years. Then a few years ago I was commuting with a friend, coming back from work . And they lighted up, so I said "what the heck, give me some"
A few minutes later I realized that I could not afford to get any more stupid than I already was.
For me it was not a pleasant experience.
So the pant I have looks to me to be ready for harvesting. Went on YouTube to find out how to dry it, and it looked like a lot of work so forget it. anyone wants a free madjawadga plan come and get it, otherwise I have to look up Hemp weaving

I harvested a week after this.

So you dispute my assessment? Or are only current residents allowed to comment on Thai social order & politics?

Before it was decriminalised, you could have gone to any beach party or bar and people were openly smoking it. I remember being outside one bar on Koh Lanta and a Thai fella in dreads was walking up the beach with his own bong allowing everyone he passed a toke.

It's a bit more discreet in the cities, but always very easy to find.
