    Lockdown day 9.

So my wife was down in the village helping her mum take care of her father who's been a bit poorly, she was due back on the 12th, but decided to come back earlier, on the 10th. She arrived back about 10.30 pm with a couple of kids in tow, the country cousins (her brothers kids, boy 11 and girl 10). 6 weeks summer school holidays have started.
The next day, Monday the 11th, I went off to work and they all slept in. I came home as usual and we had dinner then the missus decided to take the kids, my daughter 11 and the country cousins, for a walk down to the park and the beach. a few minutes later they were back.
We live in a gated compound and the gates were locked and the place was swarming with medical people. A case of covid had been found. It was the head teacher of a kindergarten within the compound. Many kids and teachers from here and some from outside had been exposed.
We were locked down while everyone was tested, then tested again, then again.
At first it seemed no big deal, the stores within the compound remained open and neighbours wandered around (spreading the virus?) I told the missus to hurry up and buy rice while I bought what remained of the vegetables in the one small vegetable store and a few beers then everyone went home.
The next morning people in full PPE came to the apartment door and tested everyone for covid. They scan an app on the phone and you get a green, yellow or red indication a few hours later depending on the results. That day the stores were still open so again I got a few beers and settled in, the following day the people in PPE came again to test but the stores were still operating though by now stocks of rice eggs and oil were depleted.
By Friday morning all the stores had been sealed off and people were stationed outside each entrance on each building to stop people leaving (so no more beers to pass the time).
Apparently quite a few have been carted of to quarantine hotels and those of us who remain can't leave our apartments. Every day they come to test in the morning and leave kits for us to test ourselves in the afternoon, so everyone's tested twice a day.
Every day they leave a bag of groceries at the door, vegetables, chicken, pork eggs and fruit, certainly enough. We've got loads of rice, and pasta so we're ok for starches and the freezer was full anyway as I'd stocked up in anticipation of 4 kids home over school holidays, I also stocked up on UHT milk, so even if they stopped dropping off the groceries we'd be ok for a couple of weeks. (Though I used the last bread this morning and no beer).
Getting bloody sick of it. Thank god for internet, internet TV, and smartphones.
I'm dying to get out of the house and go for a walk or ride I can tell you. I feel bad for the country cousins who came all this way and haven't left the compound.
It's a pain in the fucking arse. I'm going to hammer a few cold ones when it's over.
(mind you with free groceries and not leaving the house, haven't spent a penny in over aa week)

^ Living in a gated compound probably makes you one of the fortunate ones. Imagine the poor buggers suck in a tiny flat in a huge block of flats. Must be a nightmare.

Finally a story from within Xi's great firewall.

There's nowhere in the back that you could sneak out of ? Or did they read you the riot act about that ?

    Wot a palava.

Pretty much everyone around here has had it over the last 6-8 months. They stay in their bedroom or their house for 5 or so days and that's it. No bother, no issues, no one really cares.

The Chinese must be spending/losing trillions over such nonsense.

Yeah, um, within the gates the compound, or 'garden' as they call them, are about 15 blocks ranging from 8 to 15 floors. So we are pretty much as you describe.

Yeah, it's crazy. we should be done now. I reckon 3 days of testing twice a day without a positive test should pretty much clear us.
I'm dying for a nice cold frothy brew.

No, can't leave the building, they've got people sat outside the door of each building freaking out and blowing whistles and shit if you try to leave the building, never mind sneak out the back.

Think I'd rather stay in the building than be snuck into a reeducation internment camp.

Well it's going to make those beers at the end especially delicious.

Here's the testing crew. Sweltering in those plastic suits I bet.
Took these in the first day or two before we were confined to the apartment.

Most of my online students are in China. Over the past couple of months, there have been some real horror stories from students in Shanghai, locked up for weeks on end.

I shocked some by announcing that last week I tested positive for Covid (in Pattaya), but I didn't have to quarantine or even stay at home - just wear a mask and keep my distance from others.

I was just joking. The main Chinese cities probably feel like Singapore or Tokyo. Then when you get further out , it probably starts to look more like Thailand.

Ppl are already politicising this thread. Heaping pity on you for living in Xi's commi fist.

My question is not what you think it looks like, but what do you think life is like?

Each and every day you make a bigger fool of yourself. In some perverse way this gives you pleasure. Strange indeed.

But what do you think life is like for the people living there under communist rule?

Anyway, Day10 and restrictions have been lifted a little. We're allowed to leave the apartment and wander around the compounds few small streets and lanes. The little shops are open so I'll be having a couple of coldies tonight.
