Back home we used to get free tea/coffee and sandwiches which you could have sent direct to the table as long as you were gambling, which was pretty convenient.

Well, the sandwiches were, usually were were there for later boozing first and foremost.

The most I won was 250 quid on roulette on those awful fixed odd betting machines . Decided never to use them again and think it was a good decision

    Cheap thrills

used to go out with a wonderful Filipina who enjoyed the slots.

Had a rule before entering the casino. I would give her 200.00 and give myself 200.00 to play. When that money was gone, we wouldn’t spend any more.

There were plenty of times when we would walk away making more than spending. If she would win 200.00 dollars over the initial 200.00 she would be happy and willing to leave. I would always split my winnings with her.

Making the time last as long as she could, she would play the minimum amount on a burning 6 slot machine.

    I wouldn’t

One afternoon sitting next to her while playing, the alarm and the flashing lights went off on my machine. I stepped away and asked her to take my seat. She was thrilled and took a picture (which you’re not allowed to do) to send to her daughters.

She walked away with a little over 6,000.00 (after taxes were removed). She gave me half.

    Miss that woman.

Not really, I just said that amount because many people buy scratch tickets and I've only ever heard of most people winning about $100, I don't normally win more than $100 even at the slots.

That video is amazing from that perspective. The casino I sometimes go to also has a horse racing track in the back which I've never been. Always been interested in checking it out. I'd have no idea who to bet on, but it sounds like your knowledgeable wife helped you win quite a bit in Calgary. Calgary just recently had the Stampede last week I believe.

Oh, free sandwiches..nice! I usually get a coffee or sometimes a beer which isn't cheap at the casino.

I guess I am going again to the casino tonight. I feel like that is crazy for me. As long as I don't spend too much.
This pic is from a few months ago, when we spent more time watching the band and drinking than playing slots.
You can see people playing slots in the background. Wish me luck tonight! Thanks for you replies. Hope to hear more stories!

Why do some ppl say lottery tickets are for stupid ppl because your odds are so bad ? I don't even lottery. Just scratchies once and awhile.

It's just ironic that these "smart" ppl don't realize that their odds of starting a successful business are bad too. The odds of breaking out of being average are low no matter what you're doing. If it's stupid to buy lottery tickets it's also stupid to start a business.

I suppose if you randomly buy a business with no knowledge or research it would be like gambling. But the odds of you ever breaking out of being average are precisely zero!

Anyway, the Thai girlfriend isn’t as sweet. She enjoys playing the lottery......

She’ll only give me 10% of net if she wins and 12.5% of net if I purchase the ticket because she forgot to purchase it.

I get squat if her winnings are less than 50 mill.

I won Bt300,000 off someone who reckoned the USA would win the World Cup (e/w so the final would have done).
He was drunk so I wrote the bet down and made him sign it. Took some grilling but eventually he paid up.

Two aspects I don't think are shown very obviously:

    1. The horses are forced from a young age to synchronise their front and rear legs, on the same side, in the same direction. In training and during the race. Any that break are disqualified. The jockeys spend a lot of time pulling back on the reins, to keep the horses just below the "galloping stage" to stop this. Especially, as shown at the video's end, in the final dash to the winning post.

    2. The rear legs fly quite high. The jockeys legs are splayed sideways so as not to interfere with the horse's rear legs. Whose hoofs end up very close to the jockeys face.

Used to be a fairly hardcore poker machine player.... mostly I broke even with win/loss, some days up $500 some days down $500 sorta thing.

Won $2500 once with a royal flush, Two chinese guys offered to "buy" the machine off me before I hit collect.

They full gambled that royal flush 4 times and then lots it on the 5th... 40k they lost going for an 80k payout.

Have an uncle who is a tinny arse..... won 50k on a $10 scratchie then a few months later won 700k on powerball.

I have won a couple times large in Vegas. Did a buy in on a poker tournament and made it along pretty far at the Venetian. The other was 3 card poker and was playing odds with $ 100 on bonus at Mandalay Bay. Gotta love the free drinks and the comp'd room after you win.

Gave up gambling after a all-night session coming back from the Med on the aircraft carrier when I broke even and didn't have that much fun. The day before it was so rough that we could not play as the paperclips (could not use chips as that would be gambling) would not stay in pot but slid to one side of the table every time we rolled or dug into a wave.

...once won a frozen turkey at a company lottery...I've visited casinos from Esfahan (pre-Khomeini, of course) to Foxwood and Reno always in the company of other folks who wanted to experience the flashing lights, noise and losers...the attraction is lost on me...

Did you come to those amazing conclusions just by watching that video? I have never heard so much crap ever before.

The horses shown are "Pacers" and as strange as it might be to you there are some horses that actually pace as as preference to trotting.
In Australia a pacer that breaks into a gallop is not disqualified but because it has straps on its legs it can't gallop as fast as it can pace so loses ground to the other horse when it breaks into a gallop.
Calling the "driver" or "Reinsman" a jockey must be an American thing like calling a "ute" a truck. A jockey rides a horse FFS.
As for the legs flying high, I think you're the one who is high. The hoofs of the rear legs never get more than about a foot off the ground.
The Reinsman pull back on the reins not to stop the horse from galloping but to try and get the horse to slow down and not bolt and use all its energy too early. The best pacers are the ones who can "relax" under a tight hold and give a burst down the home straight to the finishing post, like the one in the video that came down the outside.

The drivers are leaning back in the cart/sulky because it can provide a bit of lift to the horse and therefore get a bit more speed. American silkies were introduced into Australia not that long ago (25yrs?) because they were faster than the style used prior.

When I was a kid about half a century ago I lived in a little town and we used to go swimming in a lake which was about 2 km away and we used to walk there quite often. Well there was this old lady who used to drive her horse and sulky into town everyday and if we were lucky enough to be walking to the lake when she came along going home she would give us a lift, it was amazing fun. Anyway the point of the story is that her horse used to "pace" naturally without restraining straps and he could really move along.
My brother owned, bred, trained and drove pacers so I have had a little bit of real life experience in that regard.

If you want to watch the best horse to ever grace the harness racing track on to YouTube and search for Mount Eden. He was a wonder horse but he unfortunately didn't know whether he wanted to pace or trot and would often break at the start. Back when he raced they didn't have mobile starts but rather the horses had to start from a standing position. One night at Gloucester Park in Perth I seen him break at the start of his race and lose 80m to the rest of the field, he then settled and started pacing and eventually won the race. To this day I still don't believe what I seen.
