    RIP little Bam

Sad to say, but my 18 year old Thai niece died in my arms around 3pm today. She had advanced TB/HIV and weighed just 21 Kg. Not the best of days for me

Just sadly heartbreaking, 18 years old. Staring the Reaper in the eye, she manages a beautiful smile. Bless you little Bam, wishing you the best in your next incarnation.

So young and innocent and in day where proper treatment of HIV can lead to a near normal life expectancy.

Thank-you for all the kind comments. This is a demonstration of how fcuked up my ex-Thai family are. When your daughter looks like a skeleton and is too weak to even walk, you'd think that it would raise some concern. Instead, they stuck her in a back room in their shack in ban nork, and it's only because Bam Facebooked me to visit her because (in her own words), 'she was a bit thin', and she heard that I had just returned to Thailand. The moment that I saw her I knew that I was looking at a dead person. There was no way that someone that emaciated could survive. I got her into hospital and after much effort, persuaded the doctors to start treating her, rather than just giving palliative care. The results were encouraging - that photo is from 10 days ago. Even 7 days ago I was able to carry her into a Moo Gata restaurant near the hospital and we had a nice meal together.

But the drugs used to treat HIV and especially TB are harsh on one's liver, and because of her low body weight, the drugs themselves started to kill her. The doctors tried to balance a reduced drug regime with health improvement, but to no avail.

No-one needs to die from HIV or TB in Thailand nowadays. But ignorance and shame and lack of education is at the root of Bam's early death.

You are right - no-one should die from HIV anymore, even in Thailand. So young is a tragedy.

God bless her and take her to a good place.
(yeah well I don't care that some don't want mention of god)

Thanks everyone for all these kind words. I only wish that I had returned to Thailand at an earlier date and been able to intervene earlier in her illness. I have of course, lots of sympathy for her mom and family for their loss, but FFS they must have realised something wasn't good healthwise when Bam started dropping literally kilograms of weight each week.

Went to the temple between my lessons to help to wash and dress her body. Once everything is completed with her funeral, I need to get a TB check for myself and her mom, because we were in close contact with Bam for several weeks (wearing masks of course), in her hospital room.

Simon, Bless you for your care and comfort for little Bam in her last days.

Don't delay in getting testing/treatment for TB, people with compromised immune systems are incubators for variants.

The key to having a near normal life expectancy with HIV is early diagnosis's and immediate treatment.
