Toasters use direct heat from red-hot elements to cook food, airfryer's don't.

    Conclusion: Not a toaster.

^ Very small fan oven, yes. It is more economical to use if you aren't doing a whole roast dinner or dehydrating a seasons mango crop.

We found an affordable oven/convection oven/air fryer thing at a reasonable price. After test flying the thing with toast, we tried air frying some sausages. I'm guessing I can dehydrate using it as well.

We did the sausages at full whack (440F) for 10 minutes then flipped them over for another 5. They came out perfectly cooked, the skin was nice a crunchy with a juicy interior that was almost as hot as lava.

We also did some of the thin "pork chops" they have here, the wife baked them and they turned out perfectly, again cooked through, but nice and moist.

We're hooked. Also, I heard that some of the fans on the air fryers were very loud, this one is as quiet as a whisper.

Unfortunately, we sold or gave away all of our oven and baking related stuff when we left Bangkok. The wife is looking forward to going shopping.

An oven. Or somewhere between a toaster and an oven. You can toast bread in it, but you can toast bread in an oven.
Frying requires fat or oil. The term 'air' fryer is a marketing phrase for the gullible.
It's a very capable benchtop oven. I've done rast chicken and roast pork with crackling. You can't fry an egg in it. But I did.
I used a small teflon pizza dish, a bit of oil smoothed around, cracked a couple of eggs into it and it went well up to the point of sunny side up soft yolks. Once it got beyond that point things got weird.

BBC Science did a podcast on the air fryer.

    Lower electricity usage.

    Lower fat usage.

There are very few things that don’t work in the modern multiple option fryers.

Ideal for smaller quantities of food. Useful for single people or dinky’s.

Edmond is dismissive of such modern items. Best recommendation of all.

Add Oil and Seasoning to Food Before Placing in Air Fryer

While you would typically add oil to a pan before adding your food, the case is not the same when using an air fryer. In a bowl, toss your food in a few teaspoons of vegetable oil or olive oil along with your seasoning before putting it in the air fryer. This method works best for cooking fresh meats and vegetables.

I can roast a whole chicken or a pork roast with crackling, enough for our family of four.

Strange, since he must generally be an advocate of small portions.

you haven't got a clue have you. Just because you coat something in oil before roasting it doesn't mean you're 'frying' it. Jaysus, you don't cook do you.
Even in a regular convection oven it's common to coat your potatoes in oil or baste them with the fat of the meat you're cooking them with. It doesn't mean you're frying them.
You really do always try to be the smartest one on any topic don't you, but you usually just end up proving your arrogance and ignorance.

    And?
I did roast chicken tonight. Blast it on high for 20 for crispy skin then 15 on medium low for tenderness.
    Perfect.
I always deep fry chips. Yours look pretty good, (McCains tasteless frozen oven fries?) evenly cooked which I find difficult to achieve with the air fryer
I always make my own from potatoes. Fortunately maris are about the only ones they sell here. Par boil for 5 minutes, let cool and dry then deep fry on high untill crispy and brown.

My previous working life was spent slaving over hot stoves in commercial kitchens, so I can tell you that if you want the ultimate cooking device, and have a large budget and kitchen, get yourself what is generally called a combi-therm oven. You can cook just about anything in them, use them as a oven with variable speed fan to cook a roast or a delicate sponge cake, grill steaks, steam vegetables, even cook a couple of hundred serves of rice perfectly. Use the timer like a normal oven or the temperature sensor probe to get that roast cooked just right.
About the only things they cannot cook are pasta and stir fries. You "can" cook chips, or frozen pre-battered fish and the like, just like an air fryer "fries", but frying those properly gives a better result
And at the end of a long day best of all is they are truly self cleaning ! Just turn to cleaning mode and let them clean overnight.

About the fries. Only place enough fries on the paper liner, one french frie deep. Spray (heavy mist) the fries and add salt to taste. Halfway into cooking the fries, flip them over and spray again.

(Thin!) My Choice french fries can be purchased at Makro’s or Tops in Thailand.

Only if you think of them as any sort of 'fryer'. I bake bread in my air 'fryer'. I also roast potatoes and chicken. Gee, it's almost as if it's a small oven.
