A couple of months ago I was around at the in-laws house and the MIL showed me a stool that she was using outdoors. It was made out of painted MDF and I guess at some point it got wet and the MDF was starting to delaminate. She asked me if I could make another stool for her.
So I knocked this together.
It is made from 6 x 2" pressure treated pine. I copied the design from a YouTube video of a Japanese gentleman making one, although he didn't show any measurements. Reasonably please with how it turned out, however I did make a mistake with the height. I forgot that the legs go through the seat and I cut the legs as if they would be attached to the bottom of the seat, making the height an inch and a half too low. Gave it to the MIL to test out and her comments was that it was a bit too low and the seat diameter was a tad too small.
I told her to just consider it a stool sample.
Based on her comments, I made a few more;
These were made from scraps and reclaimed wood. The white one is from pine and was the first one of this set. I altered how I built the later ones based on what I learned on the first pine one. There is another four seats made, I just need to mill up more of the reclaimed wood to make the legs. Also, I will use wood plugs that are of the same species of wood in the future, I thought the ash plugs contrast would look good, but I don't like it.
Somehow got into my head that I liked making chairs, so I knocked this one up last week.
I put the last coat of danish oil on it last night. It is now the wife's makeup chair.
It is based on Sam Maloof's designs. (Look him up if you are interested). The plans and templates were purchased out of the US. I built most of it in a Thai woodworking school in Bangkok. About 6 days or 46 hours of work.
