What about Nonkai? it has a "beach" on the river. A train station to wherever. Not far from Udon airport or the mountains. Houses and restaurants with riverviews to Laos. A quick trip to Vientienne and back to restock with duty free booze. A few bars with crusty old expats like the meeting place (if it's still there) if some company required.

As for where you should live, the only person that can answer that is you. Seems like you're in the perfect position of being able to live anywhere you want (inside or out of Thailand) due to being able to work from anywhere, so what remains is thinking about what you can and can't live with in your life. There must be surely be somewhere in Thailand that suits your individual pararemeters, but the only one who can decide where that will be be is you.

Tried to post a screen capture of HS 5AY but not clever enough to figure it out. Google Maps

They already have the antenna erected. Sadly rental properties are at a premium.

Simon, I doubt you'll be getting that same speed on 4G in a village.

Actually, as I have found, the achieved speed in a village is often way, way faster than in a town This is because there is no-one else that you have to share the radio channel with The trick is to choose a village which is close to a 4G cell-site tower. I use nperf.com to get this data and then do a signal strength measurement from the property that I intend to rent. If the signal is a little weak, then I install an external, directional antenna which results in your mobile phone almost catching fire with the powerful signal!

If you live in a city, you're sharing the radio channels with many others, and so your data rates can be low....

    Wink

    Ajarm Sigh Mon
    Esteemed restless uncured ham

You may find the cooler climes of the upper Nam Mae Khong, suit while I think my rural idyll is off piste, some think I have just pissed orf.

Despite remoteness we have boats to China planes to anywhere just 90m to Bangers times, cars and in some places flush expats and plumbing. If you live in Air Con and C Mai offers the cream of expats and all mod skanks.

I suggest you visit lovely Nan Province, Chiang Kham, Wiang Kaen, Wiang Chai (10m C Rai International) .
The Golden Tringle due to rug mules dug schmuglers is awash with 5G masts for army, navy, drug control so you may like to visit Chiang Saen which has several modern 6 lane highways so just an hour to C Rai or Myamnar Bumma, Lao across the river an endless supply of flexible friends.
If you prefer CANDY mark 2 and unable to get it up yourself, I know a retired airline executive erstwhile Qatar airways who can pump you up in return for "test ride " and unlimited free Absinthe or Guinness between puffs, hamrustlers , dogs and sheetluftas by appointment only.

Mae Sai , Mai arse full of Burmese skanks , yabba dabba boys and schlonky fae jade jewellry stalls does allow tus on a multi penetration visa to dine daily at Burmese prices and top tip Ansinthe at Burmese prices, it does attract the very "bottom" if you will of the barrel and is full of mispent mispelled TD pisters.

Nearby Mae Chan has splendid facilities and is 30m to Burma, Laos, C Rai International Mae Fah Lung airport hot and cold running Pussy , Whom could arse four more. Should you pop up I'll be back fertilizing (aka Moaning Night Rate) the base from October and will happy to give you a tour.I am "reasonably" busy so only have 6.5 days a week free October to May when I tour teh hills on a classic old banger taking photographs of disappearing culture.

Mukdahan is IMHO a grim hole whose only benefit is value hotels and access to Laos I'd prefer N Phanon, Nong Kai , Chiang Kham Chiang Khong Chiang Saen even Mae Sai.

I don't visit beaches , like sailing but not low life but many pleasant lesser known burgs. I leave it to our beach bums to advise.

Kalasin, Pilok, Phrae, Kanchanaburi , Mae Sodt, Chumphon, Ayuthaya and Kalasin seemed ok to me and Cha Am Hua Hin if you need the sea at a premium. Had Yai has a buzz and added burqa removal surprises but a tad sticky after more than a few knights, nicer to stay out at Songhkla with nice beach seafood and spot Manny on a clear day? I would avoid living on islands for many reasons. I feel you are wise to eschew 'Freebies" that may come back to bite you in the genticles.
You may PM to arrange a rendezvous , esp if you fancy a bit of wife sitting, you must like insane rabid little ladies seeking motel resort and earing out................

A lot of good advice above, just let me take the opportunity to offer some advice gained from experience.
If you are considering moving to the country , confider that it nis populated by country people, often of low education , for the most part very nice, but have ways of doing things for a very long time.
Some of these ways are very noisy, (Roosters, Dogs, Village head man speakers etc.), so if you like quiet..............
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

Spot on plus of course unmuffled nongs tractors motorcycles, speaker vans, I think rural Thai villages are some of the noisiest places know, luckily I live in nice niche with neighbours who nod off for siestas and really only steam on Saturdays.

As to low education I fit in perfectly these farmers are litle differet to tha Basque shepherds and bogmen of of my ilk so wiley ways, yule seldom short chenge them , sure they know little of Endogeous growth Wittgenstein, Critical Date Theory or post structuralism, but understand women, fish dogs and homebrew , my kinda khvnts, them. AnalProgs, Interior Designers, directors of Education and proffs much use fixing a pump or cylinder head gasket or painless nong disposal.

    THEIR VADE MECUM

SLACK WiVES MATTER while many locals loaf n hammocks or Yadongaterias you seldom see frisky young women without a handful.

Thanks - but don't forget that I have previously lived in rural locations in Isaan >> Bueng Kan, Nong Khai etc. Thanks to my mad ex#2 dysfunctional family, I am well-used to the ways of rural Thai folk (That also means that this is a factor for me to consider when making my decision - positive and negative).

Anyway, as others have commented, I'll probably move again after a few months

I don't make the mistake to equate education with intelligence and or smarts.I just thought I would put the "low education" comment out there as a fact for the OP to use as he might.. I am sure most of them ar intelligent and some are smart. The intelligent part I have very little opportunity to independently verify as I have no way to communicate with them in any meaningful way , but I can confirm that they are smart. If I had only one word to describe them , I would say " resourceful" another would be noisy LOL.

I am temporarily located in a rural part of Chachoengsao, in the back of beyond, while I look after my Thai niece. I've been to this region quite a few times over the past 15 years or so, but not a lot happens here, and it certainly wouldn't be on my list of places to settle down in. Thai niece is hanging on by a very thin thread, so my life is sort of on hold for the moment. These events have made me realise that one should get the most out of life when you can, since you never know what might come along unforeseen in the future. Definitely a quiet place by the sea appeals to me

I like Issan and the Mekong a lot. But I also like sandy beaches It's difficult to have both. (The Mekong beaches are somewhat muddy!).

The problem is that they are, by and large, ignorant. That is something that can be independent of intelligence, but most often real intelligence can overcome ignorance. Ignorance also says nothing about their kindness, generosity or many other attributes.

My missus has said when I am past working age, we will retire back to her house in the village in Nakhon Bumfuck. Dunno what I did to upset her that much.

Have you considered an air con Winabago type camper van, seldom seen here but total mobility .
Not sure about Ham radio aerial , telescopic like military?

So much in LOS depends on the size of your erection?

You are welcome to visit us near the Golden Triangle when I get back in October (but possibly away for Qatar football finals Dec) there are many places for rent at present from 2500 up for a studio with parking air con wifi.

Many nice hotels nearby on Nam Mae khong facing Laos from 80, room with a free Katoey I heard -8000 a day.
My pal Chalada is till renting rooms with aircon, balcony, use of pool c$10/350 baht a day and pretty sure long term deals less, and many many others if you dont want to commit to a contract .
From Oct March you wont need aircone, I dont even use a fan and my wife thinks teh Xmas New Year nights under 20 degrees ususally aboyuy 17 are cold, locals wear gloves, I see it as free Air COn. Its similar to L rabang but higher so about 4-5 cooler and less rain, usually zero rain October to march too which is why I chose to live .You can fly Had Yai or Phuket/Bankok if ou need a weekend on a beach not a priority for me. For shopping visa Lao is a few km, Burma 100 China 200 tho closed to even to Z visa big noses for now

nearly all empty since Covid/ most of tourists were bagpackers or Chinese gamblers who drive a convoy thru daily en route KIng's Casino back on Boten but rd route via Thailand faster until all therestrictions, the border is open now some live here work Lao or vice versa. If you have Tha multi entry can commute to duty free grog or send a canoe as I do with a local peddlar/paddler
