Having read the linked article, the reason is clear. There are not enough eminent female scientists to name 50% of the new species. Why there are so few female scientists is probably down to gender bias at school, girls thinking science is boring/dirty/geeky/nerdy or whatever.

However, one naming system which is AFAIK exclusive for the female gender are cyclones..... it's time we had a cyclone Simon!

There was a standup piece about that, about how they shouldn't be given weak names, as people won't be too bothered.

I know plenty of women called parasitic worms. A few called Black Holes, too.

Amazing how many posters fail to realise when the only person they’re really denigrating is themselves.

    See above.

Twenty or so years ago I was with a corporate in the UK. They had very few female techies and decided that since the system was not doing the job for them they would do something about it. They created a team to visit leading girls' schools to persuade GCSE students of the benefits of science subjects at A-level. The company saw it as a 10-year plan. Here we are, two decades on, and it is more or less balanced these days.

What a great way to encourage girls into the sciences: "You'll have slimy little parasites named after you!".

Thinking of it, they should all have Chinky names.

I went down the long path of 4 years hands-on electronics technician course, 2 years radio communications degree (I entered into year 2), and 1 year space technology MSc. Not one single female on any of those courses. (Mind you, this was a long time ago!!)

(Update: perhaps they got wind that I was on the course

And how often they do so. They also expect everyone else to agree and appear genuinely confused if another poster retorts that's not my experience.
