Busy day today for Myanmar, zilch for Thailand. I had another 2 zoom interviews for schools in Myanmar, and another 2 job offers. Nothing at all for Thailand. (I am only considering these 2 countries, Thailand because that's where I am, where my estranged family lives, and a country that I obviously know very well, speak the language blah blah blah. Myanmar, because that is where the majority of my teaching employment has been, and because of my educational charity efforts over there).

As for my health (lungs), I have to take chances wherever I live. But a warm/hot climate with clean air seems to work for me. There are many places in Myanmar that meet those criteria. Yangon is not top of my list because of the factory and car pollution...

Of course. That reason might be laziness or incompetence on their part. It could be because they consider me too old or too 'male'. It could be because they consider that I do not have the academic qualifications that they seek from their applicants.

But if they don't reply to my email, then I have no idea of the reason.

That sounds like woke-speak to me. I never said they did. Don't worry, I won't need to seek treatment for my mental health just because they didn't reply to my email.

    Hi Simon,

I don't post too much on here anymore, but I thought I'd chime in here. I worked at international schools for five years in Asia. I believe you aren't being hired because you don't have a teaching degree or QTS as they say in England. Age doesn't necessarily matter, because it depends on the visa age cutoff in certain countries. I know of older people being hired, up to 60 or 65 in some countries.

Age may be a small part of it, but I have worked and applied to many international schools and they all (at least the decent ones), want a teacher to be qualified in their home country. They also normally want 1 or 2 years of experience teaching in that home country. Employers also look at international experience as an asset, but if you don't have the other two being a teaching degree and home experience, then that is an issue.

    Good luck on whatever happens!

The reason is probably because they short list people to contact based on what I said above. If you don't meet the basic requirements, they won't get back to you.

Absolutely! I understand that recruiters want to 'tick boxes', and if the applicant doesn't fit into those boxes, then into the round filing cabinet their CV goes.. that's the real world and as I said previously, I consider it their (the school's) loss. (One concern that I did have anyway was the need to change my existing retirement visa in Thailand to a business visa. I can keep this retirement visa if working in Myanmar - I just get a re-entry permit at Swampy as I leave).

Anyway, I now have 4 solid offers from international schools in Myanmar, all with 90,000 THB (tax-free) salaries and free apartment etc. I have already made my decision as to which school to choose, based on its location (close to exercise/relaxation park and other amenities) and the student grade that I will teach (teaching KG grades a few weeks ago in Yangon required me to excel at singing and dancing, both of which are rather low down on this old guy's repertoire). My new 'victims' will be grades 7-10. I'll tell the schools tomorrow of my decision.

I have stocked up on medications, but I'm really hoping that I was just unlucky to contract pneumonia last time. I'm looking forward to returning to Myanmar, even though my temporary residence at Lamai beach (Samui) is very nice.

That's great! Glad you are feeling better. Grades 7-10 will be a big change from KG!! I know as I teach different grades everyday (K-8).
All the best in Myanmar! Samui is very beautiful indeed. Been there, done that!

By the old Moulmein Pagoda, lookin' lazy at the sea,
    There's a Burma girl a-settin', and I know she thinks o' me;
For the wind is in the palm-trees, and the temple-bells they say:
"Come you back, you British soldier; come you back to Mandalay!"
    Come you back to Mandalay,
    Where the old Flotilla lay:
Can't you 'ear their paddles chunkin' from Rangoon to Mandalay?
    On the road to Mandalay,
    Where the flyin'-fishes play,
An' the dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay!

For Mandalay it is, where I taught some years ago, and used to jog around the palace moat every Sunday. (Jogging around said palace is not so wise nowadays as it is being used as a torture prison by the junta).

Anyway, off to Myanmar (again), in a few weeks from now. This time I really (really) want to improve my abysmal Burmese language knowledge - both written and spoken. Perhaps a pretty Burmese house/bed maid who speaks no English might help?

Fark! Here I am in Bangers waiting to return to Burma, and I can't.... The junta have decided to suspend the issue of business visas to foreigners, especially those nasty ones from the USA and UK. This situation will hopefully change soon and I can get on the plane. But in the meantime, my new employer in Mandalay will get me teaching online.

Maybe it's karma "don't go to Mandalay 'cos some brave citizen will throw a grenade at the soldiers just as you're walking past". If you don't get killed by the grenade, the surviving soldiers are just as likely to fill you full of bullet holes...

So... I will probably take myself off to romantic Pattaya for a week or so. I need to visit anyway to collect some items from my storage locker (you know, spare sex-doll, anal beads, fishnets ettc..)

They have sussed your massive antenna. I hope you can get it sorted out soon. It sounds like your employer is being helpful at least.

That's no surprise! Half of their expat teachers are stuck now in Thailand (it was end of term, so many took a break in Thailand). The school will get 'roasted' by the parents if these whitey teachers can't get back before the next term starts on October 17.

That is a real problem for people who have everything but one suitcase in Myanmar. Accommodation costs will hurt if the ban carries on and eventually Thai visas will expire.

Luckily I maintain a 'retirement' visa (12 months), so it makes no problem for me. But there are some Filipino/a teachers from the school who are now in Thailand and unable to return to their jobs in Burma.

I keep abreast of what's happening re the civil war by visiting irrawaddy.com. There are some great videos on that site of homemade guns, homemade mortars and landmines, and videos of them in action against the soldiers. Quite a few 'assassinations' in the past few days in Mandalay district...
