I'd stay in Samui, if you're into the money, teach online, but maybe fewer hours. I'm also quite sure there's poor schools in the area that you can donate your time to.

Also if the school has a 12 month contract, take it as there's tons of holiday time built into the Thai school schedule. Finish school at 3:30-4:00, then start teaching in the evening, when school's closed, you've got time to travel and do your online classes on the road.

Actually, not one of the international schools in Samui even bothered to reply to my enquiry email, (a trait that most schools seem to have adopted)!

Yeah, because they just love receiving volumes of unsolicited emails from chancers and travellers.

Understandable considering their level and comprehension of the English language.

Hmm, so an international school in Samui who is currently seeking an experienced science teacher doesn't even bother to reply to an email from an experienced NES science teacher who is in Samui. Either they are idiots who don't read their email (using the email address stipulated in the vacancy advertisement), or they are unable to recognise relevant qualifications and experience or ... or (I don't know what and I don't really care TBH - it's their lost).

I know the school you are talking about. Maybe some of the staff are members/lurkers on this forum?

Not everyone appreciates your sense of humour like we do?

Actually I did have a Zoom interview today with an international school in Thailand. The interview went something like:

    You've got great qualifications!
    You've got great experience!!
    You've got a great personality!!!

You're too old, so fcuk off.......

Coincidentally, today I also had interviews and job offers from no less than 3 schools in Myanmar, (all paying more than the Thai schools), and no problems with my age. One school to teach KG, one to teach secondary and university foundation, and one to teach both primary and secondary grades. So right now, it looks like this ancient teacher will be heading back to Myanmar where I'm appreciated

    Good luck with it.

Pay rates for teaching youngsters do indeed seem pitifully bad in most schools in Thailand.

Lower than in the eighties in many cases.

    Grim.

However, you don't have worry too often about your school being strafed by a helicopter...

An experienced teacher or an inexperienced teacher?

It's all about looks in Thailand.

It's grammar, not spelling. I'm not going to police anyone's posts, my grammar - as Cy will gleefully atest- is hardly perfect. But if you are going to boast that you are a Native English Speaker * at least get it right in the same post.

° And let's not even get into it the debate about Native and Non-native English speakers being a racist, antiquated and unnecessary term mired in neo colonial attitude.s. Frankly, if that's your USP then it reeks of desperation.

I'd stay in Thailand, can't put a price on good health. I'd take option two or perhaps look at some part time work and a language school for some face to face contact, but still allowing time to teach online. I tip my hat to anyone who can teach online full time, I found it to be quite challenging mentally. Pretty much strong armed me into having a unhealthy work life balance without noticing.

Good luck with it whatever you decide. I’m sure whoever ends up giving you a chance, will get good value for money. Win win.
