If you're so set on moving someplace that isn't indebted to China Simon, maybe move to China itself?
Jinghong in southern Yunnan seems great- lush & tropical, cheap, close to Laos, Burma & Thailand, and the culture there is more SE Asian than Han, but it is amazingly multicultural in an Asian sense- they even have Uyghur & Rohingya communities. But Dai is the largest ethnicity.
Well, I don't see China offering a tempting retirement visa for Brits - nor so I see signs in Jinghong saying "Beautiful sandy beach with warm sea and coral reefs just 100 metres this way".
From my original list, I have rejected Kenya, Cambodia and Sri Lanka in my follow-up posts. (China wasn't on that list anyway).
So let's keep going with this thread and see on what grounds I should reject other destinations on my list Malaysia?? Hmm....
BTW, I have already chosen my new destination and will be there this Friday, and will post photos during the weekend for you to guess where I am.
Groping women when you're old is fine - everyone thinks you're senile
My early guess was Vietnam. Lets see.
How about Cartagena, Colombia.

All yours for 900,000 COP ($270 USD)/month
pues, estamos aqui
Malaysia not letting anyone in so cannot be there, though is a good option except for the MM2H mess they have created.
My money is on a tropical island, Atlantic or Pacific, or possibly a coastal location in similar areas.
Somewhere with hot springs perhaps?
Good luck Simon.
So these are out:
Sri Lanka & Cambodia because of debt to China
PH & VN because still closed to tourists (VN only open to tour groups).
TH because of visa rules (and bcos of ex-wives?)
Indonesia, bcos it still has a 10-day hotel quarantine
Malaysia, still closed
My guess now is Reunion or Mauritius, until something opens up in Asia. I think Simon will prefer Asia because of time zones. His online students are mainly Chinese, I think?
Good luck & safe travels, Simon!
Definitely worth a shout, nammers.
Colombia is much safer than people think and has some great places to retire to especially on the Caribbean Coast around Cartagena. Lots of American/European expats there too as there also are in Medellin (a fantastic city).
It would certainly tick most of Simon's boxes.
Have a look at Cape Verde, if you haven’t already considered it.

They do have an entry scheme but so does Candy oh and
Cabo Verde is exposed to the following natural hazards: 1. Extreme weather and climate-related events (such as droughts and tropical cyclones); 2. Flash floods and landslides; 3 Few inflatable sex aid repairpersons, repumping and drainage may have to be sent to Bresil or Gunea Pissau
If you like SAL, soccer, rancid water/tarts speak a Lusiade tongue and don't need luxury or specialist medical treatment it's a very long haul to anywhere. A close friend and Interantional sport champ whose visted all 5 contininents inc 3 with me made mistake of ooking up with a GreenCaper, he's still hiding out here.
Good luck Simon see you down Soi cowboy again or on GRINDR?
Grindr??!!! Rest assured, no matter how sexually-desperate I get, you will never find me on Grindr
I'm flying tomorrow late night - got all my various Covid documents ready, minimised my luggage etc, still coughing from the cold weather here in Turkey, look forward to warm beaches by the weekend.....
