    Best Bars in the World

The best bars list is compiled by World’s 50 Best Bars from the votes of over 600 participants around the world, including drinks writers, bartenders, and cocktail aficionados. It is based on visits made from March 2020 through September 2021. The voting guidelines and requirements were reevaluated to reflect the time period’s limited travel opportunities, due to the pandemic. For instance, this year there was no requirement to cast international votes, whereas in prior periods at least three of a voter’s seven named bars were supposed to be international.

Pleased to report, never been to or heard of a single one of them except the Connaught in Mayfair. Here is my eclectic list-

Bombas surf shack, British Virgin Islands
    FCC front bar, Hong Kong
    The American Bar, Savoy London

It seems that they have to be in capital or major cities?

Yep- it seems to be really a list of what young urban bright things vote on as of now. Wonder how many of these places will still be around in 5 or 10 years? I only popped into the Connaught bar for an aperitif before Christmas lunch with GF at the well regarded restaurant there. Sure, nice- but overpriced, and not particularly exciting or generous in serve. It's good that Buenos Aires has well and truly made the international bar scene though.

Ricks Cafe is one of the best in the world. I went there with my prostitute. It was great.

Heh, been drunk there numerous times and bought one of their sweatshirts that lasted for years when the weather unexpectedly turned cold one time we stopped there overnight while passing by. Honourable mention to the bar at Royal Hotel in Eromanga (pop 23, which was way more than William Creek) owned by the ever amicable Johnnie Walker who'd often say "you blokes know the prices, just serve yourselves and put the money in the till because I'm pissed and going to bed" around midnight.

Both prove a point though of what makes a great bar, the company you're in. Someone could go to any of the bars mentioned on the list and if they were by themselves or in shit company, probably wouldn't enjoy it. If they were with a dozen or more of their best friends, it would probably be the best bar in the world to them.

for me most great bars take a mix of time to develop and the addition of locals - you can't simply throw a load of money at creating a place

The best bar/pub is the one I am in at the time. With mates of course.

Went to Teens of Thailand on a Hash run one time. Just a hole in the wall that sells gin.

This is a list of poofter bars that sell piss weak $30+ cocktails with "infusions of grated goat toenails" or something.

I don't doubt most of my esteemed fellow TDers have been in better.

I used to occasionally drink in a pub in Moss Side when I was younger; it had a bullet hole in the window, which had never been repaired.

There were no $30 cocktails and neon lights in there, but it did have, um, a certain Je ne sais quoi.

A good pub is all about the regulars and the landlord whereas I'd usually associate those bars in the article as somewhere you'd reluctantly pass through and hope to never have to endure again due to the clientele.

This is a bit touristy, but is one of my favourites in Barcelona: El Bosc de les Fades (Barcelona) - 2021 All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (with Photos) - Tripadvisor

The interesting thing to me is they all seem all glitzy and glamorous type places that probably charge cover to get in. Those never appealed to me much. Let's be honest, if you are drinking neat, who needs special fusion type drinks loaded with sugar with a special glass, fruit and umbrella with some bartender who does spin tricks with bottles? Just pour...

I for one prefer small hole in the wall places with some good music, a small dance floor and a nice selection of Bourbon or Tequila. Staggered out of many of them with women and woke many times not knowing her name and sometimes where the hell I was. Now that's a top bar...

It's not about the bar, it's about the company and atmosphere.
Something that is sadly lacking in recent years.
Although there is one pub called the Bob Inn that still maintains a traditional ambience.
There's even a dog under the table with an ash tray full of ale.
    Shalom

Exactly where I like to hang. Sadly, the dive bar is dying off in so many places around the world.
