Sadly due to covid many traditional old school bars have gone.
But before that the smoking ban killed of more.
There's hope if you're in the know and have connections.
There's been an upsurge in people building their own bars in back gardens.
Just look on YouTube, it's full of some grand designs that would top any of those pretentious overpriced places on the Ops list.
Shalom
Exactly. Here's a couple of pics of my favourite local bar stolen off the net, I have pics on my phone from in there but obviously there's people in them that I couldn't be bothered editing out. Good food, cold beer, soft rock background music, attentive and friendly staff that only need eye contact and a slight nod for them to know to bring another drink, people from all walks of life as regular customers (many of whom have become close friends over the years), every live sport known to man available on the TV's, clean toilets, comfortable furniture, and a 5 minute walk from home but with car parking spaces available at the door if the weather's off. Yeah that'll do me.

My garden wall backed onto the base. If I looked over... At least that is what I remember.I lived in Burtonwood for a while, Waarington's aspirations to culture left with US airbase, warbrides, and the hippie. lesbian CND lot.

A great bar is reflective of the people there. It's the people that make it, not the lighting or flaming fooking drinks, but the atmosphere.
Agree with comments and some appear more like upscale eateries

THE TEAK DOOR LOUNGE
The place was before my time in terms of drinking (and is the other side of town from me), but one of my older pals lived around the corner and played football with a lot of the rasta lads from there and other pubs nearby.
He was always welcome in The Spinners (and in the shebeens in Moss Side) and you weren't gonna get any trouble as long as you behaved yourself. Anything going on in there was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy above the likes of me and you. Likewise the shebeens in Soho- I've had some fucking brilliant nights in those, but the big fellas on the door needed to recognise your face before you were in.
When it comes to mither, you're more likely to get a bottle on the head from some nobhead in Top Man trousers on Deansgate/Mathew Street in our respective cities.

Jomtien. Hemingways, I believe. Most bars look empty when they are closed.
Can't believe the Mai Arse bar hasn't had a mention
As mentioned, those pics are off the net and taken when the bar was closed. It's typically busy from around 17:00 to 22:00 as locals wander in for their dinner and a few drinks, and you won't get a seat when there's soccer on which is when I leave. Got any pics of where you go for a feed and drink in that shithole you're stuck in?
^^ Maybe I bought you a couple.
I was a member (no big deal) but I am not anymore. Told.
Braggin' rights go to the Foreign Correspondents actually- they got near free membership and a discount off everything. The rest of us plebs just supported the club financially, and enjoyed the best bar in Asia.
Back about 25years me and the ex went to the cliffs of moher on the west coast of ireland - we drove in through pretty wild wesather in mid winter on a friday (it was pretty much dark by about 5pm).
Found a place to stay and went to the local pub. Pretty typical irish pub fireplace and guiness, had a meal and then all these people started arriving and then they started pulling out guitars and bodrans etc. The place fiiled up nicely and quite lietrally everyone drunk themselves silly - from the barely old-enoughs to teh granparents, and then they all started singing. An old bloke with one leg sang an old irish song that had them all in tears, the barmaid had a voice a voice like sinead o'connor. I bought a round for the musicians and they sang skippy the bush kangaroo when they realsied we were aussies. . I got wankered on Guiness, the locals pretty much all drank fosters. Then everyone stumbled out into the sleet and went home. If you know doolin/fisherstreet there's not a lot there - perhaps there is now.
It was the most amazing and totally unexpected night I've had at a pub with just th enicest people. I later also noticed the pics on the wall of Irish celebs - I think christy moore, bono etc - playing there.
I had a hangover the next day that matched the night before.
Maeve the lady that ran the bnb sent up a cooked breakfast as I couldn't move - she'd heard there'd been a good session the night before.
I think the pub was McDermotts or Gus O'Connors.
I recall lots of good pubs in ireland but its been a while since I was there.
God's ow country on the rare sunny days.
Could be Doolin a mecca for sessions and immortalized in Chrsity's song
Outside of the overly commercial matchmaking fair of Boston Grannies and toothless farmers Lisdoonvarna nearby is great craic.
My Godmother who was a roadkill maniac bought her driving licence for 5 bob and never took a test , she is the only person ever met who is worse driver than my wife, terrifying n the 2-2 seats of a Triumph sports car. My job as a lad was to collect the sheep and fowls for the butcher, explains many years of vegetarianism, I digress.
A great lovely man, like his brother Luka Bloom an inspiration
