The first Westerner to escape maximum security prison in Thailand

In 1993, David Mcmillan had been arrested in Bangkok's Chinatown district and charged with heroin trafficking.

He was convicted and thrown into the "Hilton" - a maximum security jail with up to 20,000 inmates, electrified concrete walls and a 16-metre moat as a perimeter.

But he escaped. I escaped the world'''s toughest prison the '''Bangkok Hilton''' while facing execution using hacksaw, porn mag & an umbrella

He wrote a book about his 40-year career in the narcotics trade - 20 of which were spent in prison - called Unforgiving Destiny and now lives a pretty simple life with his partner of 15 years, Jeanette, and installs CCTV for a living.

It's an interesting story, unfortunately it's written by someone that can't string two sentences together. Worth a read though if one is interested in Thai prison books.

That's odd...he seems quite articulate in the interview. Did someone else write it ?

What, someone less articulate than him? Maybe to make it more ‘gritty’.

He certainly doesn't seem to stumble over his sentences, like the previous Oz prime minister Tony Abbott. Or talk like Fishlocker

No idea. It's either on a bookcase 2 meters away, a bookcase upstairs, or shoved in a box in the blackhole store room. If not the latter, I'll take a look tomorrow if I can be arsed. Might even read it again if I can drag myself away from Toca Boca.

The amazon reviews shed light :

"It's a shame this was so poorly written. All the grammatical sins (run-on sentences, sentence fragments and even changing tenses within one paragraph) make the story confusing and hard to follow. Several areas of too much detail test your patience to the point of boring you senseless. It's especially difficult for an american to read when you're unfamiliar with austrailian (and british?) slang and expressions.

About half way through, I skimmed and skipped to get to the actual escape, which was so tedious I skimmed through that until he was actually out of the prison near the end of the book.

I was hoping for a page turner a la Midnight Express. If you're looking for that, you'll be disappointed."
