The first five winners, who will each collect one million pounds ($1.4 million), will be announced at a ceremony on Sunday.
I guess this is what he is talking about.
A perfectly good endeavour, but from the title of the article , which I will admit I did not read because I really don't care what Willy thinks. "Prince William says great minds should focus on saving Earth not space travel" it sounds to me that William says great minds should focus on saving Earth not space travel.
and my question to him is, why does he think that space travel can not help save earth?

Just trying to have a conversation on the subject, not being critical
Even at William's pet project, I bet those participating are using data obtained from space based satellites. So......

He just believes rich people and people should be focused on saving the planet as opposed to going up to space for a ride. He's worried that younger kids are having anxiety about the future of the planet.

I agree, joy riding is counter productive. But the inclusion of Shatner in the crew of this flight was a marketing ploy. How many of us will be talking about this if it was not for Shatner?
IMO space is our greatest hope for a solution to the environmental problems we face. Earth solutions are only stop gap solutions.
Resources on Earth are finite, where resources from space are inexhaustible. The only long term solution to our environmental problems is turning earth into a park and a bedroom community, and looking for our resources in outer space.
IMO as well meaning as William might be, he is short sighted and stuck into legacy thinking.

one way would be that without space travel we would not have satellites in orbit to monitor the environment and act on it, . Another way is developing technologies that would allow us the capacity to protect ourselves from extraterrestrial threats such as asteroids. A third would be to allow us the capacity not to have all our eggs in one basket. A fourth would be to mine the moon and asteroids for resources.
The list goes on and on.

I don't think shooting Shatner into space was ever the issue. Bringing him back was.

I'm glad he got to do what he wanted to do anyway. With his age and size it was a bit worrying.
