Cool What is in a name?

    Son of Rhys is right

Like teh de of Frecnch teh Vons in Germany "; in Ireland and Mc MAc in Scotalnd and Slavic suffixes in Cymraeg the prefix is Ap.Ab

The Welsh patronymic system describes family trees in terms of the male line only and records the family association in the 'ap' or 'ab' prefix ('ap' is a contraction of the Welsh word 'mab', which means son). For example, Rhys ap Dafydd translates as 'Rhys, son of David'.

    Ap Hugh = Pugh
    Ap Rhys = Price
    Ap Richard =Pritchard
    Ab Evan = Bevan
    Ab Owen = Bowen
    Ap Ieun/John = Upjohn
    Ap Hywel/Howell =Powell
    Ap Ros = Prosser

Teh ab ap prefix is itself from mab meanning son as in Mabinogion

These patronymics gradually changed to fixed surnames with Anglicization from Tudor era onwards.

The most common surnames in modern Wales result from adding an s to the end of the name, as in Jones, Roberts and Edwards.

With so many of these plus Davis, Davies and Williams familiar usages evolved

    Jones the Butcher
    Everna the Post
    Harry the Dildomonger

All real people. Malcolm Axeman leapt to his death after he lost his money on the dogs, Ronnie Muscles, a thug was knifed and killed by his wife, Harry the Black the first man of colour ever in the town and a well loved man. Billy Sticks a newspaper seller who was quite mad as was Georgie Onions. Georgie used to push a handcart and used it as a battering ram to knock children down. Teacher Bessie was a transvestite road sweeper, a man who was incredibly strong as he had earlier been a blacksmith's striker. Every Friday he would wait on his doorstep to ask my friend Terry to put a shilling in the gas meter.

I forgot Reggie Spit. He wore his Brylcreem with pride. Poor bugger no longer with us. Couldn't cremate him on account of the Brylcreem. He used to dribble a lot and spit all over the place and this gave him his nickname. I don't think he was a member of this forum but he would have fitted in nicely.

I met a man in Cardiff whose real name was Sydney Melbourne Newman. There were two sisters in my town called Cortina Ford and Marina Ford and, while I am at it, there was a woman called Diamond Jubilee Jones. I also knew a woman who was glad that she married a man called Davies so she could change her surname. Her maiden name was Rosie Harse. All true.

One of the strangest names I encountered was Ivor Edward Charles de Gaulle Pingue.

A common practice in Wales just after the First World War was to include a battle or place name . So, my friend's father was Eric Antwerp Jones, and there several who had the middle name of Ypres.
