    Is 'actress' not PC nowadays?

    Dear Teakdoor Agony Aunt

I was just reading an article in the very-PC Guardian newspaper about Jane Birkin, who has recently had a stroke. The headline 'Actor doing well after stroke' confused the hell out of me.

Is the word 'actress' now not PC?

What about waitress, hostess, headmistress? Surely by 'cancelling' these words, this discriminates against 'someone'? Can't I call myself a headmistress, even though I'm male?

    Confused of Luang Prabang

Would you describe yourself as quite frequently bored, with few diversions, Simon?

Headmasters and Headmistresses have just been 'Head Teachers' for the last 30 years or so.

    Just a 'Heads' up.

I think the world is generally heading to genderless titles. It can be very confusing for some but they are mostly the ones that won't be on this world too much longer anyway.

    Bricklayer and Bricklayeress?

    Accountant and Accountantess?

    Surgeon and Surgeoness?

The problem of the language that's not really perfect .

It can lead to such embarrassment when a man is recommended with his penis problem to a doctor: Go and see Dr. Brown. Then he is surprised when opens the door seeing a lady Dr. Brown, he rather would avoid a lady...

(That cannot happen with much more perfect Slavic languages, the name expressing the sex)

FFS - So those crap 70s and 80s comedy shows were actually documentaries, it seems.

This kind of misconception only happens when you tie yourself to a single biased journal. If you really want a local weather report, just open the windows and look at the real world.

    Seaman = seafarer

Though we (in PH) still call them seamen/ seaman when speaking in the vernacular.

Chairman = chairperson or just "chair"

That's just a function of how many years NZ is behind the rest of the world. You'll get there one day!

But to be fair, many countries do not use Master either. Better to call the senior leader of the school Headteacher or Principal, or Head of School or Superintendent or CEO...

Fuck me. Who made these new rules?

If somebody prefers to be called a Head Teacher etc, then that is what I would call them, other wise it's Headmaster or Headmistress .

When does it stop? What am I allowed to say? Do the French have to change their language from masculine and feminine? Do we have to stop calling the Aussie rugby players a 'bunch of Shelias'

We call them AB's. Still do. Short for Able Bodied Seaman.
