Yes, I admit that in the last 20 years or so of my life in south-east Asia, some (most!) changes in the Western World have passed me by I was tempted to use 'developments' or 'progress' for that word 'changes'. But then I decided that IMHO, many changes that have occurred are not progress - they are the opposite. TV shows are crap, comedy has been censored so much that one can't even say 'wog', let alone other derogatory terms for members of our species. I'm happy watching Carry On films, Dad's Army, Are you being served? etc.

Being out of touch with the modern world seems to be so much less stressful. I prefer things that way...

Well, let's just say that the local police, despite being told by Vientiane to 'leave me alone', are still making life difficult for me. Yet another visit today to the police station at their beck and call. I told them to stop bothering me, or else I will fcuk off to some other country, (which of course means FA to them!). Lawyers are working behind the scenes to sort things out, but I hate paying police bribes because they will just keeping asking for more $$$... Turkey looks nice for Brits (UK pension is index-linked, no tax for me, dirt cheap, sun, ..er ... fat women in hijabs). Well, at least Candi can keep my company

Indeed, the academy awards have have separate prizes for best actor and best actress so why is the use of the feminine form outside of the awards sexist and in need of deprecation?

Some aspects of the fashionably fevered and urgent neutering of language seems like an unnecessary loss of cultural nuance, spice and flavour.

    Owngoal, counterproductive and deflecting

We, as humans, have way more important things to address.

Actually I don't think so. It seems to be a case where the immigration police are cracking down on people living in Laos but not actually working. So I have a business visa and work permit through an agent, and I've lived quietly on that basis for a couple of years. But, just as with other countries in Asia, now it seems that paying for a work permit and not actually working in the office and receiving a salary from the company listed on your WP is not acceptable, even when paying a bribe.

So my problem may well not just with my situation - other expats living in Laos might also start to have similar problems.

I can solve this by setting up a Lao company that is registered where I live. But the set-up cost is about $5,000 plus annual fees of about $1,500. Why should I do that when other countries are more welcoming?

It's no guarantee that the police won't make further problems for me. I'm selfish you know. I look after myself first. If I can get a better deal in another country, then I go to another country. I don't live in a country to line someone's pockets
