It's very true. I've built a home gym which is mostly weights so if I do it right I would actually gain weight but I plan to double up leg days with cardio in the form of mountain biking. If I ever get home!

Plan of action here is skipping rope and 5k runs in the rubber trees out back until I get home and cycling + home gym which is just a weights bench, cross trainer, chin-up/knee-up frame, dumbells, kettlebells and as of course my trusted skipping rope.

I'm really tempted to buy a Wahoo Kickr bike and get in on the Zwift action, but it's nae cheap.

Might make a return tot eh hash runs if it starts up agean.

OK, I am a formerly thin person....
After years of being effortlessly thinish and fit, I am now 100 kgs at 184cm tall.

This gives me a BMI of 29.5, just under obese. However, my wife banned scales from the house after one gave her a horrible shock, so I may very well have gained enough to be obese. Although I hate walking with a mask on, it's back to a brisk 10,000 step walk (about 5 miles) 4 or 5 days a week!

I didn't give up the beers though and consequently my Beerguts out of control. I hate to think what my BMI is . Pretty sure I'm gonna have to take evasive action and stop hoovering up the pies and inhaling the frostys. Havent seen my dick in a while due to the verandah over the tool shed Worse. OK, I'm in as well. Some may recall my thread about stopping smoking and starting vaping back in April. That was a precursor to my stopping vaping at the end of June. As a consequence, I've not spared the horses in the food stakes, as my contributions to the kitchen and meal threads will testify. Anyway, as well as enjoying food, there has been no exercise for the last couple of months, in part driven by the gym that I was using closing temporarily as someone who had tested positive for Covid had been a regular there.

The weather is crap at the moment, and has been for some time, so not really inclined to be cycling. Was thinking about what kit would be the most benefit to me in terms of cardio and strength for all muscle groups, and after some research decided on a rowing machine. I ordered one from Decathlon on Sunday, and lo and behold, it has been delivered at 7.15 p.m. this evening (having been sent from Bangkok, which I think is pretty good). I'll get it set up tomorrow, and also do my first 'official' weigh in (reckon I must be in the high 80's) and BMI.

Unfortunately, a calorie deficient diet is the key to weight loss. Exercise can speed things up or offset the calories so we can eat more. I’m willing to give it a go but I will be in alcohol situations without a doubt, so I’m going to stick to clear spirits and soda with fresh squeezed manao.

Sound investment PAG. I do love a rowing machine as an all-rounder and I used to own one, but I need to up my game for cycling. I started cycling regularly with a group of friends but I went back to Scotland for 8 months working and they all stepped it up a gear, went semi pro and left me behind. Since then I’ve been cycling alone. The weather can really get in the way of a good cycle too, as can the kids, so I will keep on top of it with a serious indoor bike. As I mentioned before they are not cheap, but I think it is a sound investment and still has good resale value.

I think I read that Slap swears by those, as pretty much the only piece of equipment a person needs.

If slap swears by something exercise related, it's kosher for sure.

That bladdy .6 pushes me up to 25.1 and 'overweight', though to be fair it's mostly muscle mass and not lard.

^ Sorry mate, she's busy at the moment!

What I've found is that if you exaggerate your height, these calculators bring your BMI down nicely. And technically I don't think it's cheating because I'm still entering the correct weight.

And it starts. Scales first thing this morning, and as I thought, upper 80's (88.2kg). The BMI that the scales come up with is pretty much in line with the NHS figure also.

I have osteoarthritis in both hips which is bearable if my weight is kept down and the occasional pain killer. Over 80kg it becomes more noticeable, and a definite problem when over 85kg. I've been giving more priority to stopping smoking/vaping these past few weeks but time to knuckle down. Strict diet has started.

Assembled the rowing machine this morning, just need to read up on the included computer for programs and goal setting etc. Got a place for it in front of an outside TV to help keep me from getting bored. It folds up also, so pretty portable.

Bad start for me. Got back from night shift and straight out running, round a 1km track round the rubber farm at the camp. Set off at a good pace, got a personal best 1km and 1 mile then half way round the 2nd lap something went weird between my calf and my ankle (front and back) which was new on my. Tried to walk and jog it off but stopped at 2km at had a rest and a stretch. Went back out for another lap and got best 1km time again then took a rest and went out for one more lap. Will try again tomorrow.

At work I went at the dumbbells 4 times. Each time 3 sets. 40 bicep curls (20 each arm) then 10 push ups. 3rd set 40 then to failure and push-ups 20 then to failure.

Those are inclined push-ups on a box about knee height, cos the cabin’s too manky to use the floor.

Body composition is much better and more accurate.

Not trying to shit on anyone's efforts, losing weight / getting in shape is an admirable goal, it's just that BMI is a shit tool.

I was once told on BMI that I was obese and needed to lose 'at least 10kg'... I was <10% body fat at the time.

I hear ya, but for me it's about competition. If I just went at this alone I would lack motivation. I've declared this month's plans to my Mrs, mates, FB and you lot, so now I'm committed.

    Not quite.

Less Cebu mountains, more 12.5km riding on a straight, flat road in me fake, itchy lycra.

Then turning around and cycling home again.

    How's the winner judged anyway?

Whomever lowers their BMI score the most?

If I'd have clicked to that I'd have stayed up scoffing cakes and doughnuts til 4am.
