Back in Thailand now — though, spent the Christmas holidays with my parents and sister's family in the states.

Snow isn't too common in the Seattle area, but was a beautiful sight to see this year.

I'm not sure whether I am answering the right question so I'll have two goes.

How long has dodgy construction gone on? At least since the Romans invented concrete, I'd guess.

How long do these structures last? At least 2 years because government contracts mandate a guarantee. To be fair, the concrete lanes around here seem to hold out pretty well, of course there are never any frosts so that helps. My feeling is that as built they are fit for purpose, they are possibly a little over-specced to allow for some corner cutting to save some money which can then be redistributed.

I can read and write Thai but I cannot understand spoken Thai...

Bottom left... a straggler from your tree? A euphemism surely?

And don't worry about understanding anything... they all seem to speak some kind of dialect anyway and no-one understands anything.

Anyway, do you guys like board games? And when I say 'you guys' I'm talking about your lovely Miss Mango Thai cos I'm sure you have Action Men to arrange. Why not send her on over?

I got my daughter her own Monopoly game for Christmas cos she loves playing it so much. My social life in Korat is so good I had time for a game tonight on New Year's Eve to Christen the new set.

Immediately obvious was that the new Monopoly has replaced the Wheelbarrow, the Thimble, the Boot and the Iron with a Penguin, a Duck, a Cat and a Dinosaur.

    Why?

I was going to be the Duck out of defference to England's cricketers but ended up being the Dinosaur cos I'm a geologist.

    Let the game commence!

And if I get a problem... I'll whoop her at table tennis.

    Yes, Korat is this good!

KGBGF's daughter was a monopoly addict too

But she insisted on being the banker which did not sit right with me as she was only 8. I reckon I should have been banker being the oldest. But it was a moot wrangle as she beat me regularly anyway.

I did get my own back at the table tennis table though.

Looks like a quality set-up you have got there. How did Santa get that down the chimney?

I actually bought a table tennis table a year ago and have never set it up. I need to get organised. Another great proprioception neuron stimulator.

looper, nice photos but you need to get your horizons horizontal.

most cameras will have a " virtual horizon" display in the viewfinder.

on some of the more professional cameras there should be a setting to compensate for such a disability.

i am reminded of a dudley moore/ peter cook sketch.

Fantastic blue skies. What’s the temperatures like right now? I haven’t not been but Dubai was quite pleasant around February so I’m wondering if Egypt is the same?

We're generally a little bit cooler than the UAE, Saudi, Kuwait etc and now is late teens-mid 20s in the afternoon but cool (and even cold) at night (I've got a heater in the bedroom which is pretty much always in use between December and mid-February).

From experience, this will last until mid-February before temperatures start to increase and you can expect it to be reaching 30 most days by early April. August will be 40 to 45 plus (and when Saudis/Kuwaitis etc who can't get to Europe come here to cool off, get pissed and generally treat Egyptians like shit).

Blue skies are pretty regular though and in Aswan, close to Sudan and where those pictures were taken, it can go many many years without rainfall. Unbearable in the height of summer.

    I love this picture, Looper.

What city is it in the background? Have they got a women's cricket team?

If so, I know a few lads from my neck of the woods who are looking for an even game.
