    Am I going to die?

My fridge is a living, breathing concoction of multicellular organisms as I'm shit at cleaning it out.

Because I'm WFH and was feeling peckish, I grabbed some spag and some cooked chicken, and pulled out two tubs of Tesco Tomato and Garlic pesto, cooked it up and it was delicious.

I was wondering where the fuck I got the pesto (Tesco stuff is limited in the sandpit) so went to check the packaging and noticed that it said "Best Before June 2015".

    Am I going to die?

What "Best Before" dates have you ignored and were there any consequence?

Yes harry. You are going die. But it is unlikely to be from pesto.

Best before dates are a suggestion basically, more to do with taste, rather than anything else. If it tasted ok, i would think you are good.

The main problem with eating these out of date items is that there is frequently no immediate consequence but over the longer term they can sometimes lead to septicemia which can indeed kill you with very little warning.

In any case, good luck with that. I'd considerer a stomach pump.

It tasted rather nice actually. Maybe it improves with age, like me.

Karking out just prior to England's first taste of football glory in 55 years.

That'd just be about how it goes.

I've got some sausages in the freezer that a mate gave me about 3 years ago. I don't want to throw them out but also not keen on eating them.

...What to do with 2 packs of Italian sausages from an excellent butcher purchased before the pandemic and tossed in the freezer: if we had a dog, the answer would be easy...I mean, one can always get another dog...

The sausages contain a lot of fat. Fat gets rancid even in the freezer. If you are hungry and have nothing else you can eat it. But you probably have to be quite hungry.

Milk is the only "best before" date I take no notice of. It needs a sniff test.

One of my ex's many complaints about me: "Why do you always have to sniff the milk?"

At least, that is what I think she said, I seldom paid attention.

^The pour into the sink method is good for checking milk freshness too.
    Pours freely = good.
Pours like wet concrete = give it a swerve.

A fridge should be defrosted annually for a thorough cleaning. The fixed compartments are best wiped over with a cloth dipped into a dilute but strong bleach solution and left to dry. All trays, racks and removable compartments similarly should be rinsed in a bleach bath and then washed again in warm soapy water.

Sausages, minced meat, burgers etc., should only be stored for a maximum of one month provided they were placed in the freezer compartment on day of purchase ( post shopping respite in a commercial establishment provided it's air conned counts as 'day of purchase').

'arry most certainly will die but probably from stupidity.

Whether it is self-defrosting or not, it should be disconnected from the power supply and thoroughly cleaned in the manner I described allowing it to dry with the door open.

Indeed, people do by ignoring hygiene, usually through ignorance. The average uncleaned fridge probably sports more cultures than the fucking UN.
