    What car would you buy?

The 2nd hand car market in Thailand isn't great, but I do spend a lot of time looking around at what's out there.

It's a good way to kill time here on the night shift and the more I look the more I change my mind on what will be my next car.

I've always been a bike kinda guy and never had a car license for back home as I've never sat the test. I have owned a few cheap cars back in the day though.

When I settled with my Mrs over here, started our business, got a dog etc and the time came to get a car, I bought a Honda Jazz. That was a smart move. A good wee size for her to learn with, a hatch back with internal space akin to a fucking tardis (Makro runs for the bar/restaurant/bakery) and good for the dog at the time too. 7 years and 85,000kms later this car has billed me for absolutely nothing apart from brake pads, tires and fluids. Anyway, that's her car now.

When my old man passed away last year I helped myself to his pickup. It's an old Chevy Colorado Z71 3.0. The A/C is fucked, stereo fucked... in fact the whole thing has seen better days. This thing has done backflips down the beach road ffs. Mechanically, runs like a dream though. I'll probably keep a hold of it for convenience and run it til the death, as I have no idea how to actually sell it legally.

So anyway, it's coming time for me to get myself my first proper motor. Mine. I've never really had one. Something with guts, something fucking cool. Comfortable. Fun. Probably nearer to the end of the year.

    So I ask the question:

If you had a 1,000,000 baht budget (flexible) to buy a car from www.kaidee.com what would you buy?

I can't do 2 seaters, 4 seaters fine. Preferably MT to keep her out of it but not essential. Cool points for RWD.

To get started, I did see this 2009 RX-8 for 589,000bt:

    https://rod.kaidee.com/product-362181982

As many will know, this comes with a catch. No mention of the mileage or when the rotary engine was last rebuilt. Probably around 150,000bt every 50,000kms.

    --------------

Toyota 86 GT comes in a bit hefty at around 1.3mil

    https://rod.kaidee.com/product-361956791

A bit cheaper than the BRZ.

    --------------

Subaru Impreza WRX STi for 450k:

    https://rod.kaidee.com/product-362141586

    --------------

Some Mizu Evos, some tidy mercs, old BMWs with JZ conversions...

I dunno, I've never done this before.
    Lang may yer lum reek...

Would have a CRV but I think it too long to fit in my carport.

You wouldn’t be able to keep Roller Girl out of it, though.

We did actually discuss upgrading the Jazz for the HRV. She's set the bar hight with a CRV to get the compromise she wants. That will mean sell or trade in first so we'll see about that next year. She's tight as a drum though so I only need to mention how much extra her fuel will cost and she might decide to keep the jazz a while longer.

The Honda City eHEV RS is also interesting for me. I want to try an electric car. Didn’t see one on Kaidee, though.

    Is that fully electric?

I don’t think we’re quite there yet for that. Hybrid might be a safer option for now.

I'd be wary. Nothing wrong with RX8's, I like them, but the Renesis motor can be a bit fickle if not maintained correctly.

You'd want to be seeing receipts for a new seal kit at some point in its life at a minimum.

The 4 seater rule is a bit of a hitch.

I'd probably ditch that and go for an SLK Brabus.

Think I'd rather an R107 SL (if you can find one for the price) or 450/500 SLC.

When I first moved here 14 years ago I bought a new Fortuner. When I met M'Sahib, I taught her to drive and as I was still working away, we went to look for another car for her (the Fortuner being a bit large for a novice driver) when she passed her test. We ended up getting her a new Accord 2.4 (probably because I like the look of it more than a Jazz/Civic), though ironically it's actually longer than the Fortuner.

13 years later, she still has it and won't part with it on the basis that she classes it as a 'gift', which you never sell. It has done 25,000 km in 13 years, is serviced every year, and is still immaculate. Being a 2.4, it's very quick and comfortable.

With your budget, I'd be looking at something new rather than upmarket second hand with potentially dodgy history. If you could stretch that budget a bit, the new Civic RS hatch might fit the bill in terms of practicality and performance.

I keep looking too. I was not the UK sole winner of Friday's Euromillions lottery, a mere GBP 111 Million, so I am still on a budget.

I have never owned a Scooby, I only remember that they were thrashed around a lot by young hooligans back in those days. That's a 1997 car, almost antique.

I have wondered about getting one in Thailand because the AWD can be useful occasionally and I don't want a truck-based lump (no offence to the many owners here) and certainly never want to be accused of owning a diesel, spitting particulates all over the planet.

This Scooby is 17 years younger than the blue one and looks very tidy. I might be tempted myself if there was a dealership anywhere around here.

2014 Subaru Impreza MT, Baht 650,000 and 37,000km.

Yeah I hear you, but I'm not overly concerned as my go-to mechanic drives an RX-7.

I know, I know... but I got 2 young kids so we'd end up having to leave it at home most of the time. Plus the school run.

    Too impractical.

    Helpful.

Having couple of motors (12A and 13B) rebuilt by a guy in BKK currently myself.

4-door Hilux with auto trans and 4 wheel drive, new.

The lack of good tooling and mechanics here makes anything to do with engines and transmissions a money pit/hassle. Rotary engines are a small market even in the west with fickle parts availability here and even fewer mechanics. Same with legit tuners and dynos. There are some around but it’s a tiny market.

If it were me I’d get a new Hilux or fortuner, and play around with motorcycles as a hobby.

Guess that depends on your definition of “plenty” and “decent tuners” as well as what you’re trying to accomplish.

There is a certain model of Civic that I’m rather fond of, but I think I just have this thing I need to get out of my system before I have a mid-life crises and buy a Raptor.
