    Lawmakers lawmakers

I've noticed this relatively new term used a lot in articles or reports about U.S. politics.
WTF? I'm pretty sure there's no one with official title 'lawmaker', So what do you reckon is up with that?

Not sure what you're having a problem understanding. Members of congress have always been considered lawmakers.

It just seems I hadn't noticed this term used so much if at all by the media until the last year or so.
So why aren't they just refered to as what they are, members of Congress.

Maybe you heard about legislators which is the same, lawmakers is just easier to understand or that was the intention anyway.

Why call them lawmakers? It seems a dumbing down for the U.S. population.
Just call them members of Congress (or even legislators)
