...I've met both: neither group provided a lot of humor, knee-slapping or otherwise...this guy's best audience is gathered at a cocktail event in somebody's living room after everyone's had a few drinks...a few chuckles before the conversation turns to the time...

If you've met both then you'd see that the performance was a piss-take of a stereotype. An example of self-deprecating humour that many Americans don't understand. And you're right that it's not prime-time comedy hour, it's light comedy. It's not great, but it's not bad.

I'm fully aware Boomers and Americans have a limited range of what they consider funny. Step outside the boundaries of 70's British smut and American 80's level sitcom with laugh track machines and you will be shocked.
