or a giant water bug
Lethocerus indicus - well done balders
^^^ I'm gonna give you it.
I netted this giant water scorpion out of the pool this morning... we get quite a lot fly in in the wet weather. There will be people collecting them at night with torches in the flooded land around our house.
I don't want to get picky because I don't know enough about it, but...
This is known as a giant water scorpion (Nepa cinerea), which isn't a scorpion at all but an insect, Order Hempitera, Family Nepidae.
It seems the giant water bug (Lethocerus indicus) is a little bit different. Class Insecta, Order Hemiptera, Family Belostomatidae.
But I don't want to get too technical here and after discussion with the adjudicators have decided to award Baldrick an 'owed Green'.
Well done Baldrick!
Nepa cinerea Now I know.
I saw one in the garden the other day, ugly looking customer. It flew off as I approached and surprised me with its orange/red abdomen. I tried to describe it to the gf, to her it was an insect, end of story, she couldn't recognise it from my description.
I thought it was rather exotic. Now I look it up I find that it is common and widespread in the UK. I had never seen one there.
