Nothing more to say than what almost everyone here has said. Let it go. She said police, I doubt she went to them.

...that's why the teacher was on her knees apologizing...I suppose you could have filmed the event and posted it online to assuage hurt feelings, but would you really want to go that far?...

In that case a public apology is appropriate, if true.

May be not but the witnesses to the public event haven't witnessed the teacher apologising so therefore the crime stands in their eyes.

That's exactly how I feel and hope that having the incident placed on record will clear my daughters names when the rumours start circulating within the school. And they will.

Anyway. Up to the missus now as to how she wants to proceed. I'm only a stupid farang and I do not understand Thai culture.

If the teacher made others aware of the incident, she should let them know that it was a mistake and the items were found. Case closed. Apologising in private does not undo the harm she has caused if she made her accusations public and she has a duty to right the record. She could have just not told anyone she found them so her honesty needs to be taken into account.

    ^ This

We all know how sensitive people can be (not only Thais but it is heightened), she may feel embarrassed that she did the whole wai thing and feel demeaned and take it out on your children at a later date.

Apologising in private for a public incident isn't sufficient.

I think you made the right move to not go and hear the apologetic teacher as you were on the beer. But that also means you don't know how genuine the apology was - but getting down on knees is rare.

If it was me - I'd want some form of resolution and so I'd ask the wife to arrange a meeting to meet the teacher and ask why she jumped to that conclusion and tell her how upsetting that was to hear a teacher presume such a thing about your kids.

I'd do this over food or a coffee away from the school. Tell them at the outset, you are considering making a formal complaint and spell out why you feel the need to prevent fall-out.

Then - if you feel she's genuinely sorry and it won't go further - forgive her. Her career might be on the line. It's not a well paid job and everybody deserves a 2nd chance IMO.

in europe i'd have to agree, here, a whole new ball game and no chance of success without major contacts. they dont have the same laws on defamation as (the west)

I find this a little unbelievable. Do you mean the staffroom? She gave your children the keys to the staff room? We never let students into our staff rooms in all of the schools I've worked. It is generally a 'no no' that students are allowed into a staff room.

No big deal for you maybe but we're talking about 2 teenage girls that are emotionally charged due to their body changes in life. Bad enough for that to happen around the same time as being labeled a thief.

Unfortunately this is all 100% kosher.

And to cap it all my MiL is/was friendly with the teacher involved as she tutored at the school in the village where we live prior to going to teach at the school where the incident happened.

My missus has now decided to see if our daughters get any micky taken out of them come the start of the new term. If they do she intends to take things further. I'll be at the grog shop if they need me.

Agreed, no need for a poll.

The irrational "teacher" needs a lesson.

Thank fvck she came clean, could've turned nasty and still could.

Never, ever underestimate the ability of a Thai to double down on stupidity. An apology has been offered and accepted. The social contract is complete. Going back and picking further at the issue could have all sorts of unintended consequences.
