Miserable bastards might be demented instead

People with early-onset dementia are often mistaken for having depression and now Australian research has discovered the cause: a profound loss of ability to experience pleasure - for example a delicious meal or beautiful sunset - related to degeneration of 'hedonic hotspots' in the brain where pleasure mechanisms are concentrated.

The University of Sydney-led research revealed marked degeneration, or atrophy, in frontal and striatal areas of the brain related to diminished reward-seeking, in patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD).

The researchers believe it is the first study to demonstrate profound anhedonia - the clinical definition for a loss of ability to experience pleasure - in people with FTD.

Anhedonia is also common in people with depression, bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder and can be particularly disabling for the individual.

In the study, patients with FTD - which generally affects people aged 40-65 - displayed a dramatic decline from pre-disease onset, in contrast to patients with Alzheimer's disease, who were not found to show clinically significant anhedonia.

The results point to the importance of considering anhedonia as a primary presenting feature of FTD, where researchers found neural drivers in areas that are distinct from apathy or depression.

The findings were published today in the leading neuroscience journal, Brain.

The problem in divining just who may be suffering from this deficiency is that the older we more intelligent and sophisticated get, the less likely we are to be titillated by what the lumpen and hoi polloi might find stimulating.

A glorious Titian sunset is indeed a sight but I have to say after a lifetime of them one is unmoved now. And as much as I enjoy a fine paella valenciana washed down by a bottle of Faustino followed by a tarte tatin dolloped with clotted cream, it is scarcely a memory of any note.

My pleasure receptors are now much more refined and seem to focus on deriving a satisfaction, lifting my spirits, from observing the misfortune of others who irritate me.

Given that we are now in the Age of The Stupid when the hubristic are getting fucked royally there seems no end to my fun.

    Schadenfreude, you can't beat it.

At least you have the excitment of finding out if you can use the pool daily, that's got to keep you on your toes.

You no longer take pleasure in watching the turds bob past in the "cerulean" seas of Pattaya?

    How sad.

But how can that compare with the heady days of trying to smuggle sausages into entertainment venues?

I mean, locking your retirement cash into the Thai condo market, unable to leave a country in which you are surrounded by people you loath and all the while repeatedly calling others stupid. It really is

that just about sums it up perfectly.

there is fun to be had poking a stick at some of the angrier and more sensitive characters here, baiting them with observations and insults and knowing that in their umbrage they cannot resist replying in an idiotic, infantile, repetitive and self righteous manner, usually but not always including false accusations of miserableness, ethnicity, failure, homosexuality, being old, hypersexuality ( in the case of m.m.) and dementia.

surely the main purpose of a gutter forum like this is for the wiser, erudite and more perceptive amongst us to insult and banter with those here who for reasons i cannot begin to fathom choose to reveal intimate details of their lives. and their predictable responses merely confirm their utter and sheer idiocy.

long live the human zoo that is teak door, and in particular the pack of neanderthal apes (and baboons) who make a visit here so much fun.

The article, I am afraid, is pretty much gibberish and makes little sense.

    What does make sense...

The Four Noble Truths comprise the essence of Buddha's teachings, though they leave much left unexplained. They are the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering. More simply put, suffering exists; it has a cause; it has an end; and it has a cause to bring about its end. The notion of suffering is not intended to convey a negative world view, but rather, a pragmatic perspective that deals with the world as it is, and attempts to rectify it. The concept of pleasure is not denied, but acknowledged as fleeting. Pursuit of pleasure can only continue what is ultimately an unquenchable thirst. The same logic belies an understanding of happiness. In the end, only aging, sickness, and death are certain and unavoidable.

Looking for physical characteristics, changing brain structure, etc and somehow trying to tie that to degenerative activity is a fools game and I'm not at all surprised this study emerged from an Australian institute of higher learning is hardly surprising.

    this,

The Buddhist Path to Simplicity' by by Christina Feldman (ISBN 0007323611)The other great obstacle to mindful attention is our addiction to pleasure; an addiction that holds within it our fear of being overwhelmed or paralyzed by the unpleasant, challenging thoughts, encounters, feelings and sensations that are part of the fabric of our lives. By filtering our senses and minds with food, sound, information, and entertainment, we also numb ourselves. Increasingly, we find it difficult to embrace the unpleasant events or challenges that life brings to us. We forget the simple truth that freedom relies upon embracing the whole of our life and world. Busy with pursuing, avoiding, and modifying we attempt to convince ourselves that we are safe from the unpredictability of a life that offers no guarantees. We try to build sandcastles before an oncoming tide.

Do not give TEFLERS a bad name in this case. Much too broad of a stereotype.

The point is of course, those who are mere Brexit buffoons and fodder for the blue-collar machine, so exemplified by Numfuktwat and the Cockwomble king, is that they are all imprisoned by circumstance in the ghastly grey horror that is the provincial, suburban uniformity of dreary middle England distinguished by fat-bellied, track-suited, tattooed oafs and equally repulsive cellulite ridden wives and will never achieve their ambition of quitting Engerlandia not least because they cannot qualify for residence elsewhere, not even in Thailand.

Poor bastards are all doomed to rot and end their days bouncing off the walls in some council funded death house because of their dementia.
