What do You Pay the Wife's Family?

Do you pay the wife's family to do menial jobs around the house?
Like cleaning and mopping the home?
Clearing out the weeds from the garden?

I gave my sister inlaw 500 baht today for cleaning downstairs, she spent about 4 hours, and disapeard 30 minutes after i gave her the money
I didn't ask for her to do it, she just turned up, I thought she was going to clean the whole house so I vacuumed upstairs, then went to get some beers to relax with at 12:00.

To be honest the 500 was for helping her, and she is much better looking than the cousin that usually cleans the whole house for 300 baht.

Just the facts about living in Thailand.Peace.

    ^Far from the actual fact.

I know many a Thai that own businesses in Thailand. They employ family members and have been very successful for generations.

I just leave it up to the Missus as I don't want to create an issue.
I would either just give them the money or tell them I don't have any.
If I were to try and get them to do some work for the money they would most likely just stuff it up and it would cost me more to fix it.
Either way no one in a Thai family will starve if one of them has food or money.

Nothing. Why should we? The wife and her family are all successful in their own right.

The thread is a tongue in cheek shot at how Thai family can suddenly show up and start cleaning your house or land, (this is while the wife is away)
Basically they need some money and start working at home, you think "oh thats nice" then you feel obliged to pay them.
So then if the going rate is 200 baht a day, you give 300 baht.(because family) then they will usually leave after an hour or so.
It's all about saving face and not asking you for money, I gave my sister in law 500 baht for her to enjoy songkran next week.peace.

As far as I'm concerned they're nothing but a bunch of hangers on who don't give a fcuk that their actions will cause problems between me and the wife. and it will be her that jumps to their defense. My Yabba taking BIL has been in trouble with the cops many times over the years. You name it he does it rather than work. He's done time for attempted murder, running a gambling den, possession of drugs, god knows how many times. When he's out and has no money he makes death threats to his mother if she doesn't give him dosh. And yet when he got sentenced to jail for 6 years a while ago, drug dealing again, she cried her eyes out. He's now out after doing 3 years, tagged release, and has he changed? No. Just goes back doing what he's always done. He has a son who wouldn't go to school so they put in a remand school. Came out about a year ago and hasn't done a tap since. Waste of time offering either of them paid work. But the MIL still gives them money when they ask for it. Wouldn't be surprised if my missus does as well.

Nah the best way is to stay away from employing family. They're nothing but trouble and they're not a rare case around here.

    My 2 baht input
I do not pay family members anything. But then again I would not let them come clean my house or property either. Its my place and I will take care of it myself. This keeps it all on the up and up and no stress for my wife to have to determine how much should be paid for the job they did. As a Foreigner here there has always been the expectation we will and should pay more. Nonsense.

If you want a maid, hire a maid but not a family member. If you want a gardener, Hire a gardener. IMHO, Keep it all separate.

That said, I know many that have big farms and they only typically employ family. But that is Thai / Thai.

Ah got it! Now I understand why my ex-wife's sister used to show up in her absence and flutter her eyes at me - she needed the brakes on her motorbike fixed and had no money... No wonder she gave me dirty looks when I fixed her bike myself!

State a fact and get a slap. Does the new babe support you as much or more than the last? Last one even paid for your wedding and gave herself her own sing sot.

Twenty years here, and the Thai family has never, ever, not even one time, shown up and just started cleaning. How bizarre to be honest.

Do you have a cleaner? Hence why they see no need to volunteer.

Personally, I find that rather sad.

The close members of my wife's family look after our house and our farm while we are away. In return I look after them as best I can, which usually means they have all the rice from the harvest apart from a few bags to meet our needs. The water pump we installed on the farm last year (electricity only arrived two years ago) has changed things for the better. We now have livestock and cash crops during the off season (single season rice area), having turned a couple of Rai into a living area for the family and animals. The family and kids love it there and seldom go back to their own house with chickens, ducks, pigs and a couple of cows to look after (no they are not cooped up in Thai style breeding pens). To be honest, I love it out there so much I can't wait until we can move permanently.

I don't give money, but I do get things built and other items fixed for them. The latest thunderstorm ripped off the roof of their house and I bought the materials so they could repair it.

Part of the extended family live in a very poor village a couple of hours drive away. I've had a few of the children stay at our house and be schooled in our village to keep them out of trouble. We get them work in other villages or down in Bangkok through the different family networks they wouldn't normally know about. In return they work on our farm during planting and harvest for the usual wages.

They have taught me all sorts of things about their way of life, the dangers and the pleasures, and where and how to find food. I feel extremely fortunate to have learnt so much.
