A completely natural repeating pattern all over the bark, branches were growing from the middle of each 'eye' and, where they had snapped off, a 'pupil' had been revealed. Each 'eye' was beautifully defined, with its own unique expression, almost as if drawn by a cartoonist. Lockdown is making me notice beauty in the smallest details, which I would have been too busy to appreciate before."

Woodlands are a special place, i grew up in then.

    In the UK Yews...

    Fortingall Yew, Perthshire
The oldest yew in the UK is said to be the Fortingall yew in Perthshire. It’s estimated to be between 2,000 and 3,000 years old, although some believe it could be 5,000 years old. In 1769 the girth was recorded as 17 metres. Although smaller now, it’s still thriving with new shoots growing.

As a kid i spent summers in boughs of sweet chestnuts, 1 meter thick, we watched the pheasants eat the brandy soaked sultanas and we'd club em.

A beautiful oak tree in Somerset.

Forty years ago I used to swing on a rope with a tyre hanging from this tree.

    Nice tree and nice story!

You've reminded me of a time our gang attached a rope to the top of a oak tree near our homes and attached the other end to a fence post at the bottom at an angle of 45o.

We then proceeded to launch ourselves down the home made 50 foot kamikaze zip wire with nothing but an old dog chain to stop the friction burns, what a rush.
I sometimes revisit that tree and think "fucking hello, we really did that".

The tallest tree in the world Hyperion. Imagine the forest around it if it was all Redwoods of this height. To bad, they all got logged.

^We have forest fires in northern BC that are going for days and are hectares in size before anyone notices. Man isn't the only thing that logs forests

^ It's not all about size!

    Another Somerset oak tree.

When I was a kid there was a gnarled old oak tree known as 'Hangman's Tree' at this spot but it died at some point over the past 30 years. The old tree is now commemorated by this new replacement...

"Its predecessor stood here in the seventeenth century; in 1685 the Duke of Monmouth tried to raise a challenge to the crown, ending in the Battle of Sedgemoor, where he was defeated. In the subsequent prosecutions, one Judge Jeffreys exacted a stern punishment that became known as the Bloody Assizes. Three men from Wrington met the hangman here - at the junction of School Road and the appropriately named Roper's Lane."

An old postcard (maybe early 1900s) of the same location showing the original 'Hangman's Tree', but taken from lower down the hill along the road to the right of the photo above...

The Dragon Tree (El Drago). What is it and why is it there? That's a question I was asking myself. Situated in the northern Tenerife town of Icod de los Vinos, this tree is one of the major tourist attractions of the island. So, what's the story behind it?
Turns out, these trees are all over the place! They are found (sometimes as related or sub-species) throughout the Canary Islands, as well as Cape Verde, Madeira, the Azores and Morocco. Worldwide, they can be seen in southern Asia and Central America. The only thing that distiguishes El Drago is its size and age.

Tenerife's famous version is huge and very old - estimates vary from 650 years to 3,000! There are claims that it is the oldest tree on the planet. The species gets its name because, when the bark or the leaves are cut, they secrete a red coloured resin, which is said to be the dried blood of dragons which, apparently, has healing properties. In the past, this "dragon's blood" was extracted on an industrial scale and used to make varnishes and lacquers. So many of these trees disappeared as a result that, nowadays, the tree is a protected species.
If you take the journey to see it, there is no room to park right next to it, so a bit of a walk is required. There is a fee to pay to see it, up close.

April of 2019 we were in Japan for about two weeks to follow the Cherry Blossoms. We landed in Tokyo but started the trip way down south. One of the stops was in Nara where we had a chance to visit the Matabei Cherry Tree (full bloom) which is estimated to be 300 years old.: 403 Forbidden

Next. I’ve been pushing a lot of trees down recently. Tree huggers, don’t get upset. It’s called proper land management. The section I’m working on now….invasive trees. And the small section (about 2 miles) I recently completed,…fire lines/firebreak.

This photo is from the Pantanal, Brazil thread I did years ago. Had to find it because of one most memorable tree there.
