    Is this acceptable to farang?

I came into the house this evening and my eldest daughter looked as if she was doing homework. I asked why she had homework and I was told she hadn't got any but was doing the homework for a school friend and was getting paid to do so. I kicked up that it was wrong but my missus claimed that this was Thailand and acceptable. No matter how much I explained that it was teaching my daughter wrong, in allowing her to do it, she wouldn't have it. Saying if our daughter didn't do it then someone else would. Is she correct in condoning the cheating?

Are you correct in not putting your foot down and saying NO, this is not happening?
Or are you a pussywhipped bitch?

She is correct in that 'This is Thailand'

I wouldn't want my kids doing it, but I'm also aware I am not going to be able to eradicate it from Thailand where it is not considered as cheating.

In the west there are a number of websites devoted to 'companies' offring to wite term papers for students for a price

And who am I as a farang a right to say what is right or wrong. It's the Thai way even though I disagree with it.

I would wig out also. I try to point out the morality of situations like this to my boy and that the thai way can sometimes be questioned. Fortunately he sees things more farang than Thai.

But I would do it with him on his own, without his mother in the picture.

But probably a different dynamic with daughters.

of course not, but pointing out the errors of their ways to a thai is like pissing into the wind.

thais can do no wrong, and if they are at fault then they will always come up with always a perfectly good reason why they had to ignore the rules.

cheating, defrauding, hoodwinking and hoaxing are often the only ways to get ahead in a society plagued by nepotism, bigotry, inequality, prejudice and privilege.

Hi Prag, I suspect it would be easier to convince your daughter that it's wrong than to convince your wife. Did you explain to your daughter why it is wrong? (And not just because you said so).

I suspect miscommunication and misunderstanding, certainly from Farang.

I used to get paid for doing other kid's homework for them when I was at school too.

I wouldn't be surprised if a chunk of these digital gonads are outsourcing their work to the digital version of Indian sweatshops and passing it off as their own.

    This.
Yes, this is Thailand and it is the Thai way of doing things. Accepting your wife’s decision, and explains to your daughter why it is wrong, has nothing to do with being pussy whipped. You are adapting to local conditions, while spreading the seed of moral codes of behaviour in this situation.

The ole TiT defense is bullshit. Tell your daughter it's absolutely wrong and tell the missus to STFU.

I'm not a farang but I think this is wrong too. Kids should do their own assignments.

Disclaimer: I always did my own assignment as I was a conscientious student, and I was the one they copied from. Lol.

As an aunt, I've partially done my nephew's crochet stitches homework. In my days, it was only girls who did crochet. Nowadays, girls & boys do it in school. So when my nephew was learning crochet, I would start the stitches for him then he'd finish the rest. They were required to paste a collection of the stitches on a booklet. So his project looked a bit funny. The starting stitches (1/4) looked nice & even, then the next 3/4 looked haphazard. But at least, he contributed in the assignment.

A few weeks later, I asked how his assignment fared. He said it was OK - not very high grade but got a passing score. Then he said that his other male classmates got much higher grades. Their stitches were all very nice, because their moms or grandmas did their assignments!

...agree: there is no universal right and wrong principle to apply when "helping others for a consideration" is a way of life...better to devote one's energies to securing the weekend's beer supply...

I always presumed Prags was a male.

Goes to show you just don't know who you're talking to online.

You never, ever know. That's why it's a good idea to say no to online romance, unless you like surprises.

I think the daughter is learing that you can use her intellect and get paid for it. In addition doing the homework again will reinforce what she has learned.

I can't believe you even asked the question as you have been living here for some time now and should know better.
In Thailand if you have a problem, in this case doing homework, and you have some cash then you then you pay and the problem goes away.
Don't worry about learning right or wrong just learn how to get money so you can "fix" any problems that might arise.

I regularly get asked to help with the families kids English homework and I try to get them to understand but with my very limited Thai it is difficult.
Besides they only want to know which is the right answer to write down not why it is the right answer.

I would try, as others have said here, to explain to your daughter why you think it is wrong but then let her make up her own mind which way forward she wants to go.
If she then decides to go for the cash, praise her for her entrepreneurial skills and teach her how to negotiate a higher price.

    Good luck.

Exactly, not only is the OP stupid, he is also making racist assumptions & generalisations. Concepts such as honour or integrity are not unique farang constructs.
