This is a good recap on what happened. This kind of glider flying is an extreme sport. When you use mountain sides for lift, you are brave or stupid or both. It is New Zealand. So Im going with stupid.
I disagree. The student was out of his depth and the instructor should've taken control way earlier when it was obvious the glider was running parallel. Especially as soon as he hit the clouds. No instructor I know would let a student take a sailplane into clouds. It nearly stalled before the instructor took control. Rule no 1 in sail planes is not to fly in clouds at least in Australia. The instructor should've told him to adjust his angle by looking at the yaw string apart from visuals. Glad he wasn't my instructor when I was learning.
