Thread: Would you ever surrender you passport for another nation state?

I am just curious? I have a few friends that are mixed one in particular who has surrendered his American passport to be full time Japanese. Of course, you would never surrender your nation of origin for LOS. But if you could?

Theoretically, yes I would. Practically though, I see no reason to do so. I have two passports already, both work fine internationally, so that's ok.

But if I had, say, a Nigerian or Filipino passport- where it can be hard to travel to many countries, or I am viewed with suspicion, and I could 'upgrade' to a US/ EU/ Oz passport- absolutely.

I have known a few US citizens relinquish theirs, but that is mainly because of their world wide taxation rules, and political dissidence. I mean, if they want to tax you in a country you will only ever visit again periodically, why bother with it?

I have never felt the need to have anything other than an Oz passport. I have travelled all over the world with minimal interference in any country, although long stretches in Thailand have been more onerous than many others.

I noticed a few expats in Indonesia do that. Why on earth would you want to be treated as a nasty immigrant whenever you wanted to travel outside Thailand?

I assume you are never planning to visit orrstralia then? Cus it's a bugger, with a Thai passport.

I could get an Irish passport easily, but personally I never saw much of an advantage of having that over my US passport.

As for becoming Thai, never! As a US citizen I don't have to be worried about making a Fufu joke, but as a Thai I could get into lots of trouble.

Easy enough to get visas to Japan etc as a Thai. No interest in travelling outside of Thailand to be fair.

Yup . . . but only Klondyke has a shit passport of that level, the rest of us are in a better situation

I have three and will be getting my fourth end of this year . . . The Kiwi is the cheapest one to renew so I'll be travelling with that when I get it . . . and can travel again.

Passports are just identification papers, they say nothing about how or what YOU feel.

I'd never give it up in a million years, but I have cousins who moved to America who have given up their Canadian citizenship. I think it is mandatory after so many years for them. Whereas my best friend moved to Canada when she was young and still has dual citizenship and votes in the US Fed elections.

I wouldn't surrender my US passport or my US citizenship. No need. Besides I have paid into the SS system why give up free money. Some day I will be able to receive payouts and buy really good Bourbon. Isn't that what SS is for?
