Walker 'stunned' to see ship hovering high above sea off Cornwall | Science | The Guardian
The effect is an example of an optical illusion known as a superior mirage. Such illusions are reasonably common in the Arctic but can also happen in UK winters when the atmospheric conditions are right, though they are very rare. The illusion is caused by a meteorological phenomenon called a temperature inversion. Normally, the air temperature drops with increasing altitude, making mountaintops colder than the foothills. But in a temperature inversion, warm air sits on top of a band of colder air, playing havoc with our visual perception. The inversion in Cornwall was caused by chilly air lying over the relatively cold sea with warmer air above.

The darker coloured projectile has rifling groves on it, which I think would indicate that only it was fired from a rifle. The other projectile was probably just ammo somewhere on the battlefield that happened to be hit by the fired projectile, making it somewhat less than a 1 in a billion occurrence.

No way the tree has been dead 300 years. It would be rotted/weathered away.
Someone's yanking your chain TC.
If there's a 300 year old tree link I'd say the tree was 300 years old (doubt it, not big enough) then it died , then someone made the carvings.
No one counted the rings as the trunk hasn't been severed.
