This is Manila bay ? Looks like Miami Beach!

Duterte delivers. He pushed the envelope to get this done.

Fast forward to 7:10. They cleaned it up. And put down white sand.

They are also going hard to clean up the water. Which will take longer. But they are already noticing clear turquoise water a few hundred feet out. The more they scrub, the closer it will get to the shore.

A little bit of authoritarianism goes a long way. Now that the people are seeing results , it gives them a reason to keep at it. Positive feedback

^^good point there, headworx! Littering is a huge problem in PI. However, there have been places which can control the litter problem, e.g. Sagada, new Boracay (after reopening), etc. Just need huge signs & huge fines for ppl to follow.

Re: those vloggers, they're the Juicy Vlog. They have some nice vids (e.g. their Mt Pinatubo adventure). But they've been locked up in BGC/ Metro Manila for 6 months since the lockdown in March, so they're struggling for content. IMO they're also joining the bandwagon of "Pinoy-baiting" vloggers who praise & are amazed at everything Filipino, just to get more views (and $$). It's known in the travel vlogging community (esp young/ millenial vloggers) that when they go to PI, their views & subscriber count rise exponentially. But once they leave PI, their views decrease. Of course it helps the view count if the vloggers are relatively good looking, young & fit (and there are click baity thumbnails of the girl in a bikini). Then they also have these exagerrated facial expressions & captions on their vids.

Another vlogger couple is "Making it Happen" (Austrian couple). Same formula, click bait titles/ captions. This couple left PI & went to Bali, tried to build a viewer base there. Few viewer counts, so they went back to PI and are raking in views. They have some good travel vids, but since the lockdowns, the vids are mostly filler.

Re: Manila Bay, yes it's being rehabilitated, as well as many parts of Manila. A large part of it is due to the new mayor, Isko Moreno. He's a rags to riches story. Started in showbiz, used his earnings to get a college degree. Used his popularity to start in politics (I think he started as a city councilor), then bow as mayor has cleaned up the markets, the underpass, etc. Recently, he was in the news because there were some Chinese cosmetic products which were being sold here with the label "Manila, Philippines, Province of China". He closed off the factory, filed cases against the owners/ suspects, and filed a complaint with the Bureau of Immigration for the suspects to be deported. It's in local news outlets, but I'll give the link to Wion, an Indian news network (so y'all can see their viewpoint).

Re: Manila Bay itself, the water isn't clear or clean. But a stroll by the baywalk at sunset or at night is nice, especially with a slight breeze. Followed by a nice meal at one of the outdoor restos at Mall of Asia. Did that last year with the BF, then again in early March this year (after our Sagada trip). Huge difference in number of patrons = covid lockdown was looming (there were already cases in the country), and the businesses / restos were mostly empty. The weekend after, Manila & the rest of Luzon island went on lockdown.

I have to admire your loyalty to country Katie, but the majority of environmental Improvements globally, is due to a near complete lack of tourists, ruining the natural beauty of a place, simply through carelessness and a lack of respect for the natural world.
Im sure this Mayor has a good heart and wants genuine improvements in the living environment occupied by his constituency. The truth is, no one could pull off the improvements seen worldwide just by wishing for it locally.

This Manila bay cleanup has been in the works for years. This has little to nothing to do with the lack of tourists.

Boracay was shut down before covid to clean it TF up. It's been an imperative of the Duterte admin since he came into office

No actual knowledge, and even less understanding.
You and millions of other tourists with a similar mindset are the cause of all the shit that needs cleaning up. Mindless consumerism at its very worst.
You clam to be in your 30s but you don’t realise that hedonism has to stop sooner or later? Most young men get it by their mid twenties.

I have a seventeen year old son who is more socially aware than you are.

    'Em No.

Nobody is more aware of this hyper crony capitalist Wiemar hellscape that we live in today than me. And I fucking hate it as much as anyone. But unlike you or your son, I know why it is happening.

And because I know why, I don't see Covid-19 as some divine Malthusian intervention that is supposedly going to be a good thing like you do. Covid-19 just gave the lunatic monetary authorities of this planet to print even more money and drive everyone even more insane.

^Du30 or his spokesman (Harry Roque) didn't comment on the issue... No comment...

@switch - yes, this new Manila mayor is good, kindhearted & is shaking up the status quo. He's young & doesn't belong to a political clan, so there's hope. Actually, during the last election (2019), there have been several new mayors elected, and being young & idealistic, they aim to do well. Example is mayor Vico Sotto of Pasig City (his uncle is a senator & his dad/ relatives are in showbiz), but the reports about him have been good. I just hope these young & good politicians don't get sucked into the system.

Use papaya whitening soap on Manila Bay

By: Joel Ruiz Butuyan - @inquirerdotnet
    Philippine Daily Inquirer / 04:05 AM September 14, 2020

I have a stinking suspicion that the government officials who planned and implemented the dumping of “white sand” along Manila Bay are people who are addicted to papaya skin whitening soap and glutathione skin lightening pills. They want everything white, because they have this insane belief that anything gray, black, or brown is dirty and ugly. This can be the only plausible reason for what they have done, because all their other explanations are plain dumb.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) says the project was actually conceptualized and funded last year before the pandemic happened. Whether it was planned before or after the pandemic, it makes no difference because the project is just plain dumb. It was dumb for it to have been planned before the pandemic, and it has become dumber for it to still be implemented even during the pandemic.

The DENR gives the justification that the “white sand,” consisting of crushed dolomite rocks, is actually for a “beach nourishment” project in furtherance of efforts to rehabilitate Manila Bay. DENR officials should be made to watch a video presentation made especially for them—a running clip of a swimming pool installed with the whitest tiles, but the water flowing into it coming from the sewage canal and the septic tank.

The DENR knows what a dangerous cesspool Manila Bay is, because of its involvement in two Supreme Court cases. In 1999, the DENR was a respondent in a Supreme Court case (Oposa v. Factoran) that was filed to force the government to clean up Manila Bay. Environmental lawyer Antonio Oposa Jr. revealed then that the amount of bacteria in Manila Bay was already at one million units per cubic meter, compared to the safe water standard of not more than 100 units per cubic meter. After 10 years of litigation, the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling ordering the DENR, among others, to clean up Manila Bay. In 2019, the DENR was the plaintiff in a case decided by the Supreme Court where Manila Water and Maynilad Water were fined P1 billion because of their failure to build sewage treatment plants in Metro Manila, and despite having collected sewerage fees from their customers since 1997. This case horribly reminded us that virtually all sewage and septic waters in the metropolis end up in Manila Bay. Oposa disclosed that in 2019, bacteria levels in the bay had risen to a whopping 330 million units per cubic meter, prompting him to call Manila Bay an “unflushed toilet bowl.”

With this dangerous level of water pollution, the DENR project of creating a fake white beach along Manila Bay amounts to what is abhorred by our law as an “attractive nuisance.” The attractive nuisance doctrine states that the owner of a property may be held liable for injuries to children if the injury is caused by an object on the property that is likely to attract children. Not only does the bogus white beach invite children to contract all forms of diseases lurking in the polluted waters, it likewise exposes the government to substantial liability because it has created an attractive nuisance along Manila Bay.

During a House of Representatives hearing, DENR officials revealed that the P389 million funding for the project came from the “contingency fund” of President Duterte. The President bears responsibility for allowing this waste of funds at a time when he has repeatedly told the country that the government has no more money to fund the pandemic needs of his people. There should be a glut of papaya whitening soap in the market nowadays because people are naturally getting lighter skin due to their prolonged home confinement. The P389 million could have bought a tremendous stock of papaya soap, and the sight of DENR officials washing black sand along Manila Bay would have brought laughter-inducing entertainment to the people, which is so much needed in this time of fear and tribulation. That could have been a much better use of public funds instead of the blood-curdling spectacle of bogus white sand dumped in Manila Bay.

Of course not everyone is happy about it. But congrats on finding the most ridiculous article that could have possibly been written on the subject.

And it shows once again , how useless universal suffrage is. Let's just do nothing. Because there's always something more egalitarian to waste money on
