RIP Wally. I hope you found the peace that you were searching for.
RIP Wally. I hope you found the peace that you were searching for.
Fgs stop comparing demons and blowing your own horn for overcoming yours.
No one else than Wally knew how destructive his demons were and no one here is in the right to question his solution of his problem.
The outcome is sad for those who knew him but he is not sad anymore.
I missed his thread but note that he shared it with us, can't imagine what he hoped or expected, sympathy, empathy, support, advice, or maybe nothing that would change what he already saw as his future.
Also not sure if that was wise, because if he thought he still had a chance, then the place not to reach out by opening up and leaving one even more vulnerable is TD, where positive and constructive posts will invariably compete with our resident retards.
Yer, you know who you are.
Not a preach, just how I see it.
RIP
A lot of helpful advice was given on his thread.
Yes, and especially if they suddenly and unexpectedly perk up from deep depression, which could be a sign that they've decided to end it; once the decision is made, they no longer have reason to be depressed. I went through this with a mate years back, from deep in the red zone to orbit overnight which surprised and delighted family and friends, just for the next couple of weeks during which he was quietly arranging his affairs, and then gone.
Not a shrink, though life experience can give useful insights.
No, his single-mindedness was clear.
But cujo's point was, I believe, that characterising the thread as being full of harsh, unsympathetic or unhelpful comments is wide of the mark.
...and, as predicted, an utter moron has bumped wally's thread.
Essentially, very few suicides arise out of rational thought. Most ensue when the balance of mind is disturbed. Therefore, claiming it is either a "coward's" way out or the action of last resort is quite irrelevant and not a little stupid.
The man was mentally ill and, sadly, his self destruction was a manifestation of that.
We're all mentally ill in some form or other, and I doubt anyone could get through a psychological assessment with flying colours.
I don't know about it being the coward's way out. Not having been there I can only guess it takes a huge and determined effort to actively end life and with it perceived suffering when the last hope is gone. I also think the 'experts' are still scraping at the edges of depression, which is basically an inability to construct a workable future, and having seen them at work doing more harm than good I'm convinced they use drugs to conceal and compensate for their own ignorance.
I'm on the fence with the terminally and painfully ill cursed with low to zero life quality, that's where individuality enters the equation and there may be times that life is worth leaving. Against that, I'm reminded of an Arab (?) saying that the man looking through death's door doesn't mind a bit of suffering.
Bottom line, there must be better forums than TD for his last thread, so fwiw I hope he had already made the decision before he started it.
Don’t hold me to this but if I’m not mistaken Christianity holds that suicide is a one way ticket to hell. Or at least that’s what I seem to recall being told by my Pentecostal kin as a young kid growing up. If that is one of the side effects of religious dogma being pounded into my head then it definitely worked. Only speaking for myself of course.
I don't know about heaven and hell; when the OT god was pissed off he would smite the bad guys and have done with it; then in the NT he decided that's not enough we need extremes and permanence, going on to inspire his inner circle to construct the heaven and hell scenarios.
In our mad world there may be a cult out there that endorses suicide, but other than the fringe nuts don't all religions condemn suicide, on the ground that life belongs to its god and not yours to take?
Hindus are forbidden to take their own life under ahimsa (non-violence), so that suicide is violence against the body which is as sinful as murder; Jewish script admonishes early on that its god requires accounting from each for their life blood, Muslim suicides are damned for eternity, and as you say Christianity also prohibits suicide, without explaining why some that actively sought suicide 'by cop' are called martyrs and have been canonised.
Note that suicide reduces the body count, which is a good enough political reason for religions to condemn the act.
While Buddhism is arguably not an organised religion, as it has no god or miracles and reveres a person rather than some spirit, it also views suicide as a negative since it destroys life, and the punishment is that the suicide 'may be' reborn in a negative role because it's previous life ended in that state.
Such very sad news.
Rest in peace, Wally.
I did go back and re-read the wally thread. Sad and sombre reading. Then went and did some reading on depression and suicide. From what he posted it seems he had nearly every predisposing characteristic towards depressive suicide. Childhood trauma, substance abuse, emotional loss, isolation, lonliness, money concerns, prior attempts at suicide or planning it. He did post a few times that he was getting professional help from a shrink, but clearly even that level of support was not enough.
It is just difficult to understand that level of dispair.
When the black dog keeps calling sometimes in your mind it is the only way out, sad.
RIP, now Wally.
Thats very sad news. Poor ole wally. R.I.P
