    What attracted you to Thailand?

    1. Always wanted to travel outside of Europe

    2. Broke up with the missus

    3. Comfortable but boring job got too boring

    4. Yellow fever and loads of minge

    5. Bang on scran

Pretty much it really, but I think a lot less of it and the people since I first arrived over 15 years ago and would never settle there. Convenient for holidays and meeting pals though.

I received an invitation from the Thai BOI along with an air ticket and accommodation paid for for 14 days.

Otherwise I would never have come here.

One of my customers proposed a partnership expanding his operations into Thailand. I was operating solely in the US. He/his company operated in China and the US. The third leg of the stool was our Thai partner, a large jewelry company investing in a large business expansion.

Business and expansion plans were well though out and executed well. We failed when our Thai partners financial backers went bust during the Asian financial crisis in'97.

Thats what brought me to Thailand in the first place mid 90's. Thai girlfriend who morphed into wife brought me back a few years ago. She got homesick and wanted to go home. So here we are. Works for me.

...on vacation from the dunes, I was impressed by the tawdry side of the cultural scene here...that and the mostly sordid clientele of the Malaysia Hotel. Taking a seat in the lobby after the bars closed, I was offered a view of debauchery that made quite an impression. How could I ever live anywhere else?...

As a kid growing up in the ghastly suburbs of Canada, landing in Thailand just on a backpack trip, completely blew my mind. Everything about it. Came for the first time in 2006. I was still living at home. Talk about a shock to the system. Going from renting big bikes on Koh Samui, cavorting with the ladies and generally having the time of my life, to back home. In the suburbs

The political crisis happened almost to the day that we left. Which just added to the intrigue.

Just everything about it. The tuk tuks ripping around the city. Even just sitting at the beach in Pattaya with all the vendors there to serve your needs. The fact that I could get off my lawnchair half pissed and ride into the sunset on a jetski. I sorta felt like I died and went to heaven.

Went with 2 friends. The one friend's family was big into travelling. So he had a good itinerary all planned up. I was just along for the ride. During the trip , I kept saying to myself , I'll never be here again so might as well do it all. Then after I thought , why ? Why shouldn't I go back again

    Long story short.

Was working as a paralegal in Melbourne with about fifty backpackers working on some mega fvck up of a case were a cobalt mine had been built in the wrong place in Western Oz. Great times and craic btw

The conversation most days was about travelling around Asia.

    Beaches, chilled out lifestyle etc.

The movie "The Beach" had just been released. Nowadays it makes me cringe.

"One day working here is one week living there" was the quote that springs to mind.

75 baht to the pound, young free and single.

    The rest is history.

R&R from Vietnam in '68. Knew I'd be back, but never expected to live there for 6 years.

Yeah the heat, the mossies, the burning plastic at sundown and all that isn't attractive.
What is attractive is my wife's home town - hottie central double plus.
Though after a while the tasty uni students, the yummy mummies and even the presentable grannies get to be too much and I need to give my eyes and brain a break.

Graduated in the 2008 recession so decided to go to Thailand and teach English until the job market picked up but accidentally ended up staying 8 years. Was planning on moving back this year, but that is delayed to 2022 for obvious reasons. I regard Thailand as my adoptive home and I'm looking forward to moving back there in the near future.

Came for a holiday in Dec 2000 having just busted up with a long term gf; them were good days, low col, 66 to 75/£ with money rolling in way beyond party excesses, spent much of the next few months here weighing the pros and cons, till the decision was made and I started winding down UK interests. Would like to have done a couple of things different, but no regrets.
