As a poor boy from S London I wanted a financial lifeboat beyond the clutches of any creditors back home whilst running a business with £350k monthly salary bill. I’d visited numerous times for the more “cultural” activities available as a single males and the fact that suites in world class hotels could be had for the price of a Holiday Inn back home.

EVA used to have a cheap first class deal for 1700 quid from London in the late 90s. I could leave London office at 630pm, catch the Thursday 2130 to BKK, arrive Friday afternoon giving me two nights out and a day by the pool at the Sukhothai before catching the Sunday lunchtime flight home in time for a pint with my business partner on Sunday night to catch up. The modest jetlag meant an easy early start Monday too.

Later I’d stretch the weekend by using TG and their overnight both ways service. What’s not to like? Caviar for dinner, pass out by the time the cheese course arrives, hotel car at airport and stop for a restorative massage en route to hotel. The bonkers economics of Thailand being that the car waiting time was more than the massage

Once I’d sold up in UK I figured owning in Thailand was a liability so sold.

And the nightclubs were open till 6am in the day. So even a 5am bedtime was still an “early night” as I could stay in UK clock

The beaches used to be great. N’ai Harn in Phuket was pristine in the early 90s

They’re pretty well trashed now, sadly

My employer at the time asked me to come out and set up the manufacturing factory and train the staff.

Koh Lipe was a great beach up until 5 or 6 years ago. Still is pretty good, but the mounting litter problems across the island were a problem last time I was there.

Drilling rig 1979, to be honest I knew nothing about Thailand at the time and wasn't particularly interested, got a chopper out of Phuket to some offshore location, flew over those rocks that stick out of the ocean and thought they were pleasant! Singapore or Manilla were more fun back then, ended up moving here in 1989 as it was a "tax haven" good place to be based, never planned on staying so long!

First visited in 1978 on one of those cheap, stop everywhere, around the world tickets. I had been to Manila a couple of times so Bangkok had to be on the list. Visited Patpong and walked into a bar that gave me a sudden déjà vu. It was the bar they had used in The Deerhunter. Then there was a Thai lady staying in our cheap hotel who was married to an American, she said. Older than me, everyone was back then.

Returned in 1986 when the small HK company I worked for had a problem, the Brit looking after the Thailand office had run off with his Thai secretary. I was parachuted in. Enjoyed the next 4 years here.

Fast forward 25 years and I was finished with corporate life. Could have landed anywhere regionally. My plan to go to China didn't work out so I looked at Taiwan (favourite), and Vietnam and Thailand. It just happened that Thailand worked first.

This probably doesn't answer the OP's question. As a very young man, what attracted me first probably were those three sirens: wine, women and song. Okay, no singing.

^FFS BLD I saw your answer of #4 and wondered what game you were playing, went back to look at the options and see I've answered that food brought me here

Make no mistake, at that time food was nothing more than fuel to me and quality flange in copious quantities was the reason for moving so I'll change my reason to #4

I came to do a TEFL and see if I liked teachering. If i did I'd go back home to do a PGCE.

11 years later I'm still deciding.

    Although done the PGCEi anyway.

Had to attend a work conference and stayed an extra week to sight see.

A young lady accosted me on the dance floor of a night club I wandered into and after getting to know each other over a drink we repaired to my hotel room.

I thought everything had gone too unusually smoothly and easily to be true until she presented me with a bill for services rendered in the morning. I decided to go with the flow and stayed with her for a week.

Her name was Rose and I fell deeply in love with her while watching her kick a frog repeatedly against a wall in a rainstorm in her flip-flops while it tried unsuccessfully to escape her attentions and she laughed uproariously.

I even wrote to her by email several times after my return. She did not reply so maybe she gave me the wrong email. Lucky I guess as I probably would have done something stupid like fly back and marry her if she had replied.

    I wonder where she is.
