Maternal grandfather: Fought in WW1 and returned to NZ and became a farmer
    Maternal grandmother: Housewife/farmer
Paternal grandfather: Fought in WW1 and returned to NZ and became a farmer
    Paternal grandmother: housewife

Both grandfathers fought in WW1, on returning to NZ their numbers were entered into a ballot where their names were drawn. Through the ballot they both were awarded plots of land of about 100 acres each in the Whakatane district. Both plots were across the road from each other.
