You vil follow ze orders and valk ze dog twice in ze day!

The German Federal Ministry of Agriculture has announced its plans to introduce a new law aimed at ensuring that all dogs in the country are treated properly and get the exercise they need. The proposal has led to many questions and ridicule directed towards authorities, who have, however, remained steadfast in their approach to forging a society that treats its pets in a better and more wholesome manner.

The announcement of the new law made by Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner was quickly picked apart by those critical of the proposals. The main point of the draft, which drew the ire of many citizens, is the stipulation that dog-owners (who amount to around 19% of all households in Germany) must exercise their pets at least 2 times per day for a minimum of 1 hour.

There are all sorts of good things about that, which is why it will probably get tossed out.

I don't know how true this is, but a friend living in Germany said that those who have dogs get an allowance / stipend from the govt. So many poor/ homeless ppl get a dog just to receive the stipend. Can anyone confirm?

That reminds me. When my uncle moved back to Ireland he was staying with my grandparents house in a small village for the first month or so while he sorted himself out a place to stay. He dutifully helped his mam, my Gran with walking her dog each day.

After he moved, my Gran was mortified that not only did her dog now know the way to every pub in the village (12 of them, I think - but that might be some Irish embellishment of story), most of the publicans knew her dog too and offered him treats and a plate of water when he dropped by.

And if you don't have the time, don't buy a dog.

Well firstly if you can't be arsed to walk your dog, you shouldn't have one.

Secondly, an hour of even gentle exercise once day is good for your health.

And in the sunlight, even more so.

Not to mention that if you think this is in intrusion in your life, it is extremely easy to opt out.

Agree with all the above but I also think govt regulating how much you walk your dog is taking it a bit far.
It's like more and more every little aspect of life is regulated.

Made me chuckle...my Thai dogs just look at me as if I'm insane when I try to take them out for a run in the April heat. In May they spent most of the time in hiding from the thunderstorms. If they need to go out they just jump the fence anyway....

If I walked my French bulldog for an hour she probably wouldn't survive it.

Not just exercise being controlled, according to the report dogs should not be left alone for too long. Who determines that, and what are the penalties?

Sometimes, idiots with authority cock up so badly that even they realise they should stick to stamping whatever crosses their desk.

Would this be a good time to remind everyone that it is illegal to own one Hamster in Switzerland. They must be kept in pairs.
