    It's only words.

Been thinking about this for a while. Listening to an old song a while back and heard the word 'swell'. American for, good, ok, great whatever. " gee pop, that's swell"
Haven't noticed it in any recent TV/movies I've seen which apart from the youtube news clips and so on is my exposure to U.S. culcha.
    Is it still in use?

A post I just read had the word kerfuffle. I know what it means but wondering if it's a commonly used word elsewhere.

Swell is definitely quite anachronistic. I personally use kerfuffle myself so if that is also then it dates me I suppose.

Just as an aside this thread reminds me of one that Robslife guy did ages ago. Lost his shit over some old-fashioned word I'd apparently used so I looked it up and turns out I'd used it precisely once.

Good old TD eh, and people think it's somehow worse now.

Kerfuffle might have been me. Think it is a pretty British English word.

Kerfuffle is a word I've never learnt so I guess there is an adequate equivalent word for it in the British nomenclature.

I think 'jerk' crosses all (english) language boundaries.

    Hello, Dolly,
    Well, hello, Dolly
It's so nice to have you back where you belong
    You're lookin' swell, Dolly
    I can tell, Dolly
You're still glowin', you're still crowin'
    You're still goin' strong
    We feel the room swayin'
    While the band's playin'
One of your old favourite songs from way back when

The word swell is used in old movies probably starting in the 1930’s. It’s pretty comical how often the word is used. Think people stopped using swell in the 1960’s.

Calling short films ‘shorts’ is a thing but not widely used. Short films aren’t used anymore in theaters in the US. If you mean the movie trailers, the ads for upcoming movies, we don’t call them shorts or promos. We call them trailers.

The shorts back in the olden days where I come from meant maybe a preview or two, a bugs bunny cartoon or two and maybe a newsreel.
