I regret not traveling to Thailand
When Covid 19 hit we were set to return to Thailand, having been in the US for a few months. We decided to postpone our plans and wait a couple of months to see how this thing played out. My thinking was that it would be much safer in the US and that we might be trapped in Thailand with travel restrictions.
We are in Florida LOL the epicenter of covid19 in the world and we cant travel anywhere!! LOL Talk about being wrong. If we had came to Thailand not only we would have been safer, we would now be able to travel to Greece (travel from Thailand is allowed in Greece but not from the US) for our summer vacation. Instead I am sitting here watching my nails grow and going stir crazy.
It merits saying it again. BOY WAS I WRONG !!!

as recently as 20 years ago if you wanted to see somewhere, you either had to look at a postcard or actually go there. these days you just log on to the net and within 5 minutes you have booked the flight, the hotel and the taxi. there is no more "unknown", and for me at least the adventure has evaporated. you can travel the world and never have to speak to a local, never have to ask directions, and never get lost. all the answers are on the smartphone, and mass tourism seems to have turned desirable destinations into theme parks crowded with burger and pizza joints, selfie addicts and filled with the sort of people who really should never be allowed to have a credit card or travel beyond magaluf, aya napa or their local boozer.

my hope is that covid will reboot the mass tourism market into something a lot more sustainable and a lot more pleasant for those who travel independently.

as far as destinations i regret never having visited, i would love to visit patagonia.

    I agree

Me and my friends went to Europe in 2004. No cell phone between any of us. It was the old style

Even the 2010's was good. Forums like this were the only media still

Las Vegas. Now I'm happily semi retired and no longer hold any wild ambitions to earn extra money I wish I'd done a high roller deal with a villa, hookers and the works back when I was earning up to £100k a month. Alas I now have more modest means and rarely splurge, for fear I might live to be 100 and still need a few quid in the bank

Seriously? You compare hating your job (which you are free to leave/change anytime) To young women trapped in poverty forced to prostitute themselves??

I kinda regret not seeing more of the UK when I lived there as I have no real plans on going back except to show my daughter her "roots". And once will be enough.

Kathmandu has many interesting lanes to wander around. It's a photographer's delight.

Pokhara is just a lovely place to kick back, relax and enjoy the scenery lakeside.

Your reality sounds miserable, I don't want a part of it. I wonder how you made up that 60%+ statistic? Perhaps 60%+ of the people you know, certainly not the 60%+ of people I know.

You're a boomer, I presume, so therefore it is up to you to fix it as you, individually obviously, ruined it in the first place.

Stupid cvnt Boomer again. I make around 100k taxed favorably and live in a ponzi boomer hellscape with the most expensive housing in the world. So yes. I could quit and start at rock bottom. Oh yes. Sounds like such an easy decision.

The thing is, you been to one jungle you have been pretty much to them all, one desert is as arid and barren as the next, a mountain range above the tree line is no different to any other, rolling plains stretching to the horizon are as featureless and desolate no matter which continent, a tropical beach becomes as tedious as any other. Travel always was about expectation but in the end no matter the destination the reality is always same, you are who you are and there is no escape, and the human condition in all its frailty remains what it is. The only difference now is that travel has been homogenised and packaged to the nth degree, and becomes but a mere factor in GDP growth, an opportunity for production line exploitation and usually as disappointing as a dull meal.

The irony is, when we are young we travel to experience a new future but with advancing age all we really want is to escape to the past.

You live in HK, Sing or Shanghai? Yea, 100k is a bit feeble. Try harder.
