Places that you regret not traveling to.

Before retiring from the game, I wish i went to Tijuana. I made a thread about Tijuana Mexico back in the day. It was going to be my third to the Mexico and Jamaica trip. I just cant believe i never went. Seeing some videos of the beauties now.. uggh They say 60-80 bucks. There's nothing quite like getting down and dirty with the ghetto hoes.

Yes. I am married ffs. That's why I am talking in post tense.

But to you. Have you ever got down and dirty with ghetto hoes just for the adventure and the experience of it ? Or are you too conflicted and insecure in your head to enjoy it ?

It's just that when I saw the thread 'places you regret not travelling to' it made me think, well it made me thing first of 'Places I'd like to go'.

It's a very negative way of framing that concept.

So anyway, I was thinking of things like skiing on NZ's south island, or smoking a joint next to a lake in kashmir or somewhere.

Then I was a bit surprised to read an op about banging whores in Tijuana, accompanied by a vid that does indeed make Angeles in the Philippines look idyllic.

So this thread isn't really what I was expecting from the title.

It's almost a parody - from someone whose life's so empty that even his dreams are depressing.

I used to own a holiday ski-barn in the Pyrenees and visited/hiked in that region many times. I always wanted to ride a horse on the GR 10 = Grand Route 10, a high altitude walking path that follows the mountains from Atlantic to Med oceans. Unlikely to meet any ghetto hoes at 3,000 metres up the mountain on an old nag though...

    Well make it different.

In the early eighties I met a guy who'd sailed into town on a yacht.
Daddy had given him the keys to the family trust at 18 and he'd bought a large yacht in the USA and commenced a tour of the ganja-smoking world - Morocco, Lebanon etc.
Sailed back across the Atlantic and through Panama. Sailed across the Pacific to the Marquesas using bags of buds as pillows.

By this stage he had a larger yacht and a wife.
The wife had the care of their toddler.
After a few months in North Queensland she was so pissed off with his happiness she made him buy a lawn-mowing business, so here was this poor sod pushing a mower in the tropical heat to prove that he was a real husband.

Some time later I'd left town and I got a message - Join him in Palau. He needs crew. Wifey has boarded a plane.
But I'd just bought a motorbike and had no spare money.
I sometimes wonder where life might have led from there.
Later I joined the crew of another yacht and life changed dramatically in another direction.
Never did get to Palau ....

Only thing good about visiting Tijuana is when you drive out the other side of it heading to Rosarito, Ensenada and further down the Baja. Tijuana is a total shithole and most of the "tourists" there are high school and college kids on the weekends looking to get plastered for cheap. I would know I was one of those kids.

I went there in 1988. The diving is great, but hanging around on the island is a bit boring after a while. The locals aren't so interesting. Still, it's in the middle of the ocean and has a good vibe.

I think the thing is not to have regrets in the first place? If I have not visited somewhere I have no image of what I may have missed?

At present I'm happy if a little bored. But it is what it is.

i was lucky enough to visit all my dream destinations in the 70's, 80's and 90's when i was infused with the spirit of adventure and before the horrors of terrorism, security, mass tourism, gap years and the rigid enforcement of regulations made travel and the crossing of land borders such a chore.

as recently as 20 years ago if you wanted to see somewhere, you either had to look at a postcard or actually go there. these days you just log on to the net and within 5 minutes you have booked the flight, the hotel and the taxi. there is no more "unknown", and for me at least the adventure has evaporated. you can travel the world and never have to speak to a local, never have to ask directions, and never get lost. all the answers are on the smartphone, and mass tourism seems to have turned desirable destinations into theme parks crowded with burger and pizza joints, selfie addicts and filled with the sort of people who really should never be allowed to have a credit card or travel beyond magaluf, aya napa or their local boozer.

my hope is that covid will reboot the mass tourism market into something a lot more sustainable and a lot more pleasant for those who travel independently.

as far as destinations i regret never having visited, i would love to visit patagonia.

Well said. Technology has changed us forever and some of the charm and challenge of life before the interwebs has been lost.

I wish I’d travelled South America around 10 years ago. I had the cash and I had the time but was having too much fun in Thailand.

Never crossed the pond at all actually, although I have plans to visit a friend in San Francisco next year.

South Africa once the kids are old enough.
