    flying with motorcycle parts

Hi all, I have a new "idea" to bring over a KTM enduro bike and wanted to run it past the few remaining members here.

I thought about bringing the engine and some parts back in my checked bags then shipping the disassembled frame and misc. stuff separately.

The engine only weighs 53 pounds so plenty of wiggle room.

I know the standard response about just buy one in Thailand but I'm short the 540,000 baht

    thanks

I think you can ship stuff classified as "parts" duty free. Most airlines have a 75 kilo weight limit on bags.

Are you shipping in parts to avoid import duties or something?

Should be no issue with engine in checked baggage (make sure it has no liquids.) as they rarely check when passing through.

Importing the rest though is a question for customs as you will pay 30% import taxes and 7% VAT on the total CIF but not sure how they calculate the bike parts value.. or whether they believe the declared value.

So they will have no problem with an old engine block stuffed into your suitcase ? You've done this ?

Thanks for the responses. I still have to think about the overall logistics and make sure it’s worth the hassle. I can get a decent used KTM 300 here for close to 400k. Back home I could bet a leftover new bike for less than 300 k so it will require a bit of research.

    thanks

Me too. Many times. Best one was I brought over a set of front coil overs from Toytec for my Hilux, one in each suitcase. Never a question.

I think Naptownmike can do same. I'd disassemble the motor. Put parts in each suitcase and maybe a few in a carry on. The more you spread it out, the better.

Mates of mine used to buy Harley's in the states , break them.down into parts and send to the Philippines. In balikbayan boxes .Hand carry the frame in re assemble and bribe someone at the LTO for paperwork. A good way to beat the huge import duty on them. I wonder if that's still a thing
