Which university in Thailand is the best for the those that wish to become a doctor?

My youngest daughter's dream is to become a doctor and there needs to be a decision made with regard to which is the best university to attend.

Her academic achievements are wonderful and she has been advised by a school councillor her marks are good enough to achieve a position in any university in Thailand.

I have always considered Chulalongkorn to be the best but she has been advised that the best for budding doctors is Khon Kaeng University.

Obviously it is a very important decision and I have told her to apply for the best but my wife and I are unsure about which university is appropriate.

I would appreciate if those in the know could offer me some feedback about this matter and I thank you in advance for your advice.

    ^ Thanks M8.

I forgot to mention, and if things go well for me over the next year, I will move the family to Australia and she can then enrol in a University there.

I worry that the Aussie system may not recognise Thai Universities as being certified to international standards and she may lose a year.

...according to a Thai friend (medical doctor) now practicing in the States, Mahidol has the strongest local program...previously a guest instructor at Chula's medical faculty, he wasn't impressed with the quality of students...^I expect a number of Australian universities would offer better training, however...

^I've heard the same. Mahidol has really jumped up the rankings. Chula is bent, and full of bent people with bent parents. Thamma is good for law and liberal arts. But I'd go Mahidol for Medicine.

...having taught there, I would have to at least partially agree: the students are wonderful but trapped in a warped university "system" imbued with Thainess...

...not strange at all, but a fact of Thai hierarchy...Sino-Thai elite provide the brains and cash, the military has the enforcement role and yet another institution has all the best patriotic songs, rituals and colors...

...a university in Australia is the better bet for medical training...

Thai university degrees are pretty much universally considered to be of a poor standard in indicating academic prowess and most reputable institutions within the western educational sphere require prospective candidates to undertake a foundation course as a condition of acceptance for further study. But, really, viewing this as "losing a year" is quite silly given the circumstances of a young life with all the promise it holds.

I'd agree - better opportunities and a more widely recognised degree

The big difference is that in a Thai Uni she would be taught in Thai, which may not be the best thing if you are planning to relocate later.

Obvious question, why not just send her to study in Australia from the start? First year she would be in Uni accomodation.

Two of my kids studied in Australia (one still studying) with no apparent adverse effects.

I would agree with Nidhogg. If you are planning on moving there anyway, avoid the disruption and enrol her from the start.

If you don't end up moving, she'll be used to it by then and can just carry on as an overseas student.

So many great responses I wish to thank you all.

If I had the opportunity I would have my daughter in Oz tomorrow but I have too many loose ends to tie up.

Thanks especially to Nidhogg and Tom and I will look into Mahidol for the short term solution. Thank you Sabang.

work in oz uni in med school.
Over the years I've seen research collaborations with KK - no others.
You're right, thai degrees aren't considered highly - plus many courses are now PGrad so UG qual is required.
All places are competitive - I assume daughter could apply as an Oz domestic student - if not int fees are substantial.

No offense, but you must have had your eye shut mate. For medical research Mahidol is the clear leader of the pack.

I think Mae Fa Luang University teaches in English. Don’t know how they rate but the campus and new hospital are beautiful modern facilities.

If coming out of high school she will have to take the Thai national university exam. You cant just randomly apply to a government university, but you can a private one. Its very competitive due to the subsidized costs at the government university.

My daughter has just received confirmation that based upon the exams she has sat and her results that she has the opportunity to apply for most universities in Thailand.

Other members have suggested that Mahindol is the best university to become a doctor and she has passed all their entrance exams.

    I am very proud!
