    Baldness and COVID-19

    Baldness and COVID-19-12385322-4x3-xlarge-jpg
Thanks to CCC for the beach selfie

In one study of 122 male COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals in Madrid, 79 per cent were bald — about double the population frequency.
Another small study in Spain observed a similar over-representation of baldness among men in hospital with COVID-19.

Male pattern baldness is strongly associated with a higher level of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a more active derivative of testosterone, and one of the androgen family of male sex hormones.

Confirming this correlation between baldness and susceptibility to COVID-19 with larger samples, controlling for age and other conditions, would be significant.

It would suggest a higher DHT level could be a risk factor for severe COVID-19.

Why are more bald men in hospital with coronavirus? The answer could hold a treatment - ABC News

Is it possible that a high percentage of people having bad enough symptoms to be hospitalized are the elderly who happen that because of old age to be also bold.
So next they might say that a high percentage of people admitted to hospitals with covid 19 have false teeth , so maybe dentures are a contributing factor to severe covid 19.
    or perhaps a limp noodle.....

taxexile's passes at ant certainly suggest that at least one of them should be shielded.

A similar story was on the front page of the UK's Daily Star on June 6th. They reported that nearly three quarters of men who had been hospitalised had no hair on their heads.
Because it was the Daily Star, where facts need not stand in the way of a good story, and because no other papers ran with it I dismissed it.
If true it is an interesting story.

Not really. The virus disproportionately affects older men. Older men are more likely to go bald.
If they did a study of men under say 35 who'd died of covid no doubt these planks would be surprised to find bald men aren't affected at all.
I think I'll apply for a grant to do a study.

Certainly age and hair loss are connected. Our friend the Internet says that by the age of 60 some 65% of men have visible hair loss. That isn't quite the same thing as having no hair, for which I can't find a statistic. It is worth some research if it helps find ways to reduce the numbers in hospitals.
