    Fruit Loopery

A suspect package sent six people to the hospital and caused an evacuation -- its contents turned out to be some very smelly fruit

Durian is popular in Southeast Asia, but its smell puts a lot of people off.

(CNN)Twelve German postal workers received medical treatment and dozens more were evacuated due to a pungent suspect package -- which turned out to be a shipment of the notoriously smelly durian fruit.

Police, firefighters and emergency services were called to a post office in the Bavarian town of Schweinfurt on Saturday after staff noticed the smell coming from a package.

"Due to the unknown content, it was initially unclear whether the suspect package posed a greater risk," a statement from Schweinfurt police department explained.

The entire building was evacuated, with around 60 employees forced to leave, before the package was carefully examined.

It turned out to contain four Thai durian fruits, which a 50-year-old resident of the town had sent home from a friend in Nuremberg.

Durian fruit stink prompts university evacuation

The spiky fruit's flavor and creamy texture has made it popular throughout Southeast Asia, but its infamous odor has gained it many detractors. Singapore has prohibited the fruit in its subway system, and many hotels ban durians because of the smell -- which some critics have likened to rotten food or dirty socks.

"A total of twelve postal workers who complained of nausea had to be taken care of on site," police in Schweinfurt said, adding that six were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Six ambulances, five first-responder cars and two emergency vehicles attended the incident. Three different fire departments were also involved.

The fruit was eventually delivered to its intended recipient.

It's not the first time durian has caused a panic. Last year, staff at the University of Canberra library were forced to evacuate the building due to a suspected gas leak, but a search revealed the stench was in fact caused by the fruit.

And in November 2018, a cargo of durian caused an Indonesian plane to be temporarily grounded after passengers complained about the fruit's room-clearing stench in the cabin.

I tried to bite into one yesterday for the first time.

It was akin to nearly biting into a block of rotten cheese that someones puked on.

^ The gag reflex kicked in before I had the chance to taste anything and clamp down.

Do you like blue cheese by any chance?

I can't eat that, only in dips on chicken wings.

What treatment did these kraut neurotics receive for feelings of nausea?

Sometimes, one truly does realise in an epiphany the world is disappearing up its own arsehole and going quite mad.

Only a matter of time they seek PTSD counselling.

One of the best things I remember about living in Malaysia was the cheap and plentiful durian. It costs a small fortune in Thailand.

I was always told never to drink spirits if you've eaten durian, something about heating the body up too much. I tried mixing it of course but nothing bad seemed to happen.

    Just thinking the same.
The appreciative side takes some adjustment.

The fruity, creamy, custard-like composition makes up for the somewhat odorous fragrance.

The conditioned and false reputation outweighs the realities - especially as applying to dullard foreigners.

MrsKW always tells me that. I always ignore it.

Durian in season now, Musang King is the best type.

They're worth a kings ransom these days. Are they difficult to grow?

Durian flavour condoms could fill a hole in the Durex Thailand product line-up.

I love blue cheese, but I can't stand durian.

Durian is like what I imagine licking the bottom of a rubbish bin would be like.

    It's absolutely disgusting stuff.

Asia's own marmite, i love the stuff and a week down with Mrs Toots family in Chantaburi during their harvest is a treat.

Not as easy as Pick Your Own in the UK with strawberrys etc

Good idea. One thing you don't see though is durian juice.

13 years with my wife. She loves them and eat it all the time. 13 years and I still cant bring myself to try it. And it's not that I am squeamish about food, I eat all short of crap, including blue cheese. But for some reason, I cant bring myself to try it. Perhaps it is all the bad press ....

People talk about the smell, but it doesn't bother me really. It's that first bite that rocks you back on your feet because when people tell you it's fruit, you're certainly not expecting what's coming next!
