You've got sainty in you, lovely people and had a few parties with them on Falklands, Ascension and Sainty, got there on board HMS Southampton. The most remote place was South Georgia, stunning scenery, nice museum, loony BAS people, told off by the ships Capt for sneaking booze to the duty crew - ironically i paid a fine to the ships fund which mainly goes on booze

There were only two ways to get to St. Helena before, (one was a 15 day cruise on the RMS St. Helena, from Portsmouth I think it was, it could be Cardiff because I did pick up a package from it there decades later) or a flight on an RAF cargo plane from Briars Norton, so you had to be in the Army to fly.
But there was no airport then and you had to land in Ascencion Island and then time it right to get on the RMS St. Helena and then spend two or 3 days on that to get there.

Him putting Ascension Island on his list though makes it appear that he has been there and I'd guess he was in the Falklands War, probably in the cookhouse

Be interesting to hear his tale

Ha ha - Willy is itching to get one over, the silly little man has me on auto red, must have upset him.

Not in the Falkland War thank goodness, that was Jackie i think.

RMS was the Falkland Island Replenishment ship or FIRS. I was due to go on it as it did UK, St H, ASI, FI and SA then back but plans got changes and i blagged a berth on soton who's Lynx pilot i knew.

ASI was a great time for me as my dad who served in the Navy stopped there in 38-39 and had pictures of himself dotted around the island - inc HMS Hoods original guns (WWI) up on the hill. For a small place its got some history - was one of the overshoot runways for the space shuttle too.

It has. A former penal colony where Napoleon was exiled and died, also a key island to drop off sick slaves on their journey from Africa to the Caribbean.

It was a lucrative trade back then for my Grandad

Honest graft back then, i was talking about ASI though.

In 2004 (i think) the flight from Brize got switched to Air Excel or something like that, i was on ASI (again) when they had to fly out an STD doctor from the UK. It transpired that the ninebobbers they had as cabin attendants were fooking riddled, they had previously had one case in 6 years but within something like 2 months of this bunch flying they had 35 cases.

Visited Cairo a couple of times for work and Sharm and Tunisia on holiday. Sorry not to have taken the opportunity then for a short side trip to Libya. Further south than that in Africa I have not been.

I lived in Zamalek for a while, about 300m from the Nile. I also lived downtown for a while, about 100m from Tahrir Square.

Back on topic as some people seem to be getting excited on trying to catch people out.

    Another question?

Where would you most like to go, just one or top three and they can be a revisit.

    Me:

New Zealand - oddly a place i have never got to despite making it to Oz (with work 3 times admittedly, never privately), it just always seemed to take too much time and i couldn't spend enough time there - one i am saving for retirement and a few months there.

Himalayas - not a country but a monster trek - i'd love to start in Pakistan and walk to Assam - a true dream, maybe a hop or two as i'm a bit creaky these days but the majesty of the mountains is something you never forget.

USA - again but a proper road trip and taking in national parks i never made like California (sequoias and bristlecones) and Yellowstone + other parks. I have a thing about trees and nature but this will take 3-4 months, time i have never had whilst working (i turned down a posting to Washington in 2002 Doh).
