The colorized B&W photo courtesy of ‘Page Siam Colorization by Noomrattana’ shows Asura Paksi barge. This barge was made in the reign of King Rama I (late 1700s). It was renewed in the reign of King Rama IV (late 1800s) and has been included in the Royal Barge Procession. The barge, actually less important in the procession, is called an escort barge. The bows of this type of barges are mostly decorated with figureheads of mythical creatures. Other types have less elaborate design.

The Asura Paksi barge has the bow that resembles a half-bird (= paksi) - half-ogre (= asura) figurehead with green body in a purple (front) and green (back) coat.

The colorized B&W photo courtesy of ‘Page Siam Colorization by Noomrattana’ shows ancient tattoo making which was very popular among Burmese and Lanna people when they entered manhood. Such tattoo portrays the image of a real man which attracts ladies. From waist down, black ink was used and from waist up, red ink was used.

The colorized B&W photo courtesy of ‘Page Siam Colorization by Noomrattana’ shows how to make a road in the early 1900s. This road led to King Rama VI’s Phra Ram Ratchaniwet (page 18/447), also commonly known as Ban Puen Palace, located in Petchaburi Province. The workers were prisoners.

^ wonderful pic thanks Nathaniel; my partner works at a civil engineering company - highways and bridges - and appreciated the view of how it used to be.
No prison labour in 2022 though, employees get well looked after.
    Keep up the great work.

The colorized B&W photo courtesy of ‘Page Siam Colorization by Noomrattana’ shows ‘Phaya Thai Palace’ Hotel.

The former palace built by King Rama VI to stay and look out over the farms, plantations, and livestock in the area.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-a01-02-jpg

After his death, his brother King Rama VII ordered the palace be converted into an international hotel.

This luxury hotel could welcome only 40 guests. The rate per night varied from 10 baht to 120 baht. Sadly, due to the gradual loss of the business, the hotel ended seven years later.

Phya Thai Palace then became the site of the first Thai radio broadcast station. Later, after a change of government, the Palace became a clinic for the Royal Thai Army and has since changed its name to the Phramongkutklao Hospital.

    Wow, that's not 'a bit'. That's 'a lot' and it's soooo sad.

The colorized B&W photo courtesy of ‘Page Siam Colorization by Noomrattana’ shows the very first funeral portrait. The deceased was one of Prince Dumrongrachanupab (King Rama V’s half-brother)’s wives who died in 1903.

Originally, the order was to be made as a locket size given as souvenir to the guests. In addition to this, the photo shop enhanced the photo (B&W version) and decoratively framed it then gave it to the funeral host who had no idea of where to place it. So the Prince placed it beside the deceased’s casket.

The tradition was not formally conceived until almost 20 years later. Even King Rama V’s funeral (1910), there was no funeral portrait of His.

Yes, that's the right place. I have never been in the area for years so I did not know it has been changed this much. I remember when I traveled to Rome (historical cities likewise), the government have blended the old and the new so gracefully. Wish 'we' could do like that instead of demolishing and replacing.
