The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) was an international organization for collective defense in Southeast Asia created by the Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty, or Manila Pact, signed in September 1954 in Manila, the Philippines. The formal institution of SEATO was established on 19 February 1955 at a meeting of treaty partners in Bangkok, Thailand. The organization's headquarters was also in Bangkok. Eight members joined the organization.

Primarily created to block further communist gains in Southeast Asia, SEATO is generally considered a failure because internal conflict and dispute hindered general use of the SEATO military; however, SEATO-funded cultural and educational programs left longstanding effects in Southeast Asia. SEATO was dissolved on 30 June 1977 after many members lost interest and withdrew.

The Royal Siamese Navy had shown interest in submarines in various procurement proposals dating as early as 1910. However, its expansion plans were limited by financial constraints throughout the early twentieth century.

In 1934, the Chief of Staff of the Navy at that time led a warship-procurement project which was approved by the parliament in 1935. The proposal included a 6.9 million-baht (630,000 GBP at the time) budget for three submarines.

Bidding was held in October 1935, and was won by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan, which offered a price of 820,000 baht (75,000 GBP) each for four boats.

These Thai Navy's submarines were named after literary characters known for their mythical diving abilities from the Ramkien, Pra Aphai Manee and Khun Chang Khun Paen. They were:

HTMS Matchanu (II) and HTMS Wirun

Memory Lane (In my own language)-a05-02-jpg
    HTMS Sinsamut and HTMS Phlai-chumphon

All four submarines departed Kobe for Thailand on 5 June 1938 and arrived at Sattahip Naval Base on 25 June. They were officially welcomed in Bangkok on 29 June and were commissioned on 19 July.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-a05-03-jpg

They all were relatively small, since they were intended primarily for coastal defense.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-a05-04-jpg

The submarine crews underwent several training exercises in 1938 and 1939.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-a05-05-jpg

In November 1940, following a number of border skirmishes, the undeclared Franco-Thai War (page 49/1207) over disputed border areas began when the Royal Thai Air Force made air raids on military bases in French Indochina. The navy was mobilized to protect Thailand’s territorial waters, and the submarines conducted reconnaissance in the Gulf of Thailand. However, they were unable to prevent a surprise French naval raid, which resulted in heavy Thai naval losses at the Battle of Ko Chang on 17 January 1941.

Following the battle, the submarines were sent to patrol the vicinity of Ream Naval Base in present-day Cambodia, but no further naval clashes took place and Japan soon negotiated an end to the war.

The submarines remained in service throughout WWII, which Thailand officially joined in January 1942, but they saw no combat. However, two of them did serve an unconventional role during the war.

On 14 April 1945, five months before the Japanese surrender, Bangkok's Samsen and Wat Liab Power Plants were bombed during Allied air raids (page 48/1181) leaving the capital city without electricity.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-a05-06-jpg

In response to a request from the Bangkok Electricity Authority, the Matchanu and Wirun anchored at the Bangkok Dock Company and served as power generators for one of Bangkok's tram lines.

After the war's end, supplies and parts for the submarines became unavailable because of the Allied occupation and disarmament of Japan. In addition, the Royal Thai Navy's battery factory was unable to produce the powerful batteries needed for the submarines.

The Thai submarine service came to an end following a coup attempt against the military government of Poh Pibunsongkhram known as the Manhattan Rebellion (page 55/1358). The failed coup, led by a group of naval officers on 29 June 1951, led to the Navy's being stripped of its power and influence.

The Submarine Group was dissolved on 16 July, and all four boats were decommissioned on 30 November 1951.

The submarines were moored for some time in the Chao Phraya River near Siriraj Hospital Pier, but they were finally sold to the Siam Cement Company for scrap.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-a05-07-jpg

Part of the superstructure of the Matchanu is preserved at the Naval Museum in Samut Prakan Province, almost the only reminder that Thailand once had a submarine fleet.

The colorized B&W photo courtesy of ‘Page Siam Colorization by Noomrattana’ shows Princess Banchob (1861-1892), a daughter of King Rama IV and one of his Royal Concubines. At the age of 30, she was very sick, coughing blood, the symptom that was beyond cure at that time. That snatched her life away.

Well they are back in the periscope again now with your dear cousins to the North looking to supply them, but in true Thai fashion the Govt seems to have gotten itself in a pickle over whether the subs will come with engines

The colorized B&W photo courtesy of ‘Page Siam Colorization by Noomrattana’ shows the famous Buddha image of Phra Buddha Chinnarat sitting in the hall of Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat in Phitsanulok Province in the reign of King Rama V.

In the past, apart from Bangkok, there was no electricity used elsewhere only candles and lanterns to chase away the darkness. Siamese craftsmen in the countryside designed to light the shady interior by making holes in the roof of the hall to let the light (from the sun) in. It also created a wonderful effect on the beauty and faith of the Lord Buddha.

As a memorial to King Taksin the Great, one of the great Thai kings who liberated the country after Ayutthaya was taken by the Burmese in 1767, a statue of his was built at Wongwian Yai roundabout in 1953, on the Thonburi side of the river Chao Praya where the king had established a new capital in 1768.

The statue was created by the Italian sculptor Corrado Feroci, who worked under the Thai name Silpa Bhirasi. A state ceremony on a day of homage to the king, 28 December, has been held annually since 1954.

The colorized B&W photo courtesy of ‘Page Siam Colorization by Noomrattana’ shows Wung (Palace) Windsor which King Rama V built for his son, (the first) Crown Prince Maha Vajirunhit (page 23/562).

Unfortunately, the Prince never lived there for he died very soon after. After his death, the European styled palace was finally demolished in 1935. The land where it once stood proudly is now the National Stadium on Rama I Road, Bangkok.

Khanom chin is made from rice flour that is left fermented for three days then boiled and after that, made into noodle shape by extruding the resulting dough through a sieve into boiling water. These noodles are used as a staple food in a variety of Thai dishes.

Although the word ‘chin’ means "Chinese" in Thai but this type of noodle is originated from the Mon people.
