I used to drive across that bridge twice a day in the early 70s when I was working at a place on Pibulsongkram Road in Nonthaburi. When the traffic was slow moving in the morning, I would often come across a BMW going in the opposite direction driven by a reasonably famous TV star/singer called Sangthong Seesai. If time permitted, he would wind down his window and point a pistol at me and give me the old "farang, farang" business. I thought he was a harmless ratbag but sometime after that he went to prison. I believe it was something to do with throwing a hand grenade into his audience at a concert, so I guess he was potentially volatile.

He was very easy to recognise:

He's the one on the left.

Thank you for sharing your interesting story.

You have resided in Thailand for a very long time.

Sungtong was very well known at that time. He was a very famous performer like you said well, partly from his look. However, he had a quite beautiful wife. His breakthrough was from the movie "Tone"

    <font size="4">

and here is his story if you care to know more...

    Sangthong Seesai - Wikipedia

Anyway, I checked but found the text being kind of mistaken.

From what said in the news was Sungtong was trying to control the chaos caused by his fans at a concert when his team came rather late. He apologized saying that one of his buses had broken down. The concert continued smoothly until around midnight when some of his fans getting drunk began the turmoil by throwing glasses, bottles and etc. up on the stage show (this term??) and followed by several gun fires.

When the polices came to the scene, Sungtong was arrested causing murders. He had served time for 4 years and 7 months.

Anyway, the news said. I don't know what the truth said.

Thank you again. I hope you like my thread.

Ps. I like what you wrote .. '
He's the one on the left'. Those two have to look alike.

Thanks Nat. I am pretty sure you are correct. My memory is that he was accused of shooting into the crowd from the stage, but that could just be hearsay. Was there someone else his in family called Suthep, who became an actor a little after him?

Yes, Suthep Srisai is Sungtong Srisai's younger brother. He is 60 now.

Last week, Mr. Shy Guava mentioned about the late Thai singer/actor named Sungtong Srisai. I was just reminded that the name Sungtong was his entertainment name (his real name was "Pieak Sri He-ra"). He took this name after a leading character of a very famous Thai folk tale. Every Thai knows this story. It was penned in 1821 by the renowned poet of the early Ratanakosin Kingdom (the reign of King Rama II) named “Soon Torn Poo”. The story goes like this…

    Sungtong (sung = a conch / tong = gold/golden)

Memory Lane (In my own language)-05-jpg

Queen Chantaywee gave birth to a mollask, a conch. Concubine Chanta cried “Jinx attacks!” and took the opportunity to convince her husband, King Yodsawimon, to kick the Queen with her freak out of the palace.

Queen Chantaywee wandered away aimlessly and finally ended up staying with a couple of old commoners. She help the old couple whatever she could diligently.

Of all five years, she finally came to notice that at the end of every day, the hut was always clean and began to be suspicious.

One day she played hide and seek and witnessed her freakish son, the conch, turned out to be not a mollusk but a small cutest boy she had ever seen. The boy came of out his shell to help tending house chores while the adults were away to find food and everything.

The Queen was so pleased with what turned out from bad to good and decided to keep the boy. Another one day, she waited until the boy came out of the shell then sneaked up to take the shell away to shatter it into pieces.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-00-jpg

The boy should have cried “F- - k!” and kicked the shit out of his mother’s ass furiously but no. That only happens in real life. This is a fiction. The boy just cried then accepted his fate and adjusted himself with his new normal life (a hip term!).

Not long after that, Concubine Chanta heard the rumors of the little prince coming out of the shell and fearing of her safety, sent soldiers to kill him.

The soldiers captured and threw the little prince who now named Pra (noble title for he was a son of a king) Sung (Thai word for a conch) into the sea. Pra Sung was saved by the Naga King. He then turned the boy to the Giant Queen for adoption.

Time passed, The Pra Sung boy grew up to be so handsome. He just discovered that his stepmother was a giantess. Fearing of being eaten, he fled away. The man left the Giant Kingdom with some magic objects including a magic black mask.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-jpg

His stepmother followed him but her beg for her stepson to come back failed. She cried a river until heart attacked. Before her death, she gave her beloved stepson a spell that could call upon animals so he would not get starved.

After Pra Sung buried his gigantic mother, he used the magic black mask to disguise himself into an ugly jungle man and furthered his journey. He then came across a kingdom where 7 princesses were choosing their to-be-husbands.

Princess Rotchana, the youngest and most beautiful of them all, was always reluctant even though her father had chosen any kind of special men, rich, handsome, smart and etc., for her consideration. Finally, he heard about an ugly jungle man and sent for him.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-06-jpg

Princess Rotchana, instead of seeing the ugliness of the jungle man, saw the handsomeness of Pra Sung hidden inside that image. She did not hesitate to choose Pra Sung to be her husband.

King Samon was very much embarrassed and angry. He chased the couple away from the palace and tried ways to bully his ugly disgraceful son-in-law.

The King came up with a quest to find a winner who could hunt most animals for food. He gave tricks to the other 6 sons-in-law of his but not the 7th, Pra Sung.

It turned out that Pra Sung, still in an ugly jungle man disguise, though not realized, did not care. He used the spell his step-giant-mother had given to call upon any animals that could be used as food while his other 6 son-in-law mates found none.

In order to bring some back to show to their father-in-law, the 6 sons-in-law agreed to cut pieces from the tips of their noses and ears in exchange.

King Samon was so pissed of the result of the quest that he tried to find a way to kill his ugly son-in-law.

Before the story got out of hand, God Indra who had observed from above, disguised himself as another king from afar and came to challenge King Samon in a game called “klee” with a bet on the King’s kingdom.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-02-jpg

The King sent all 6 of his sons-in-law out to compete but they came back losing. His 7th, the ugly jungle son-in-law, asked for a chance. Unwillingly and hopelessly, the King agreed.

The ugly jungle son-in-law was out in the field to play the game “klee” but kept losing the scores. God Indra in disguise convinced him that it was because he was not himself. Finally, he had to shed his jungle man guise off and his true self of the most handsome man that made everyone, both men and women, cried “OOOH and AHHH” reemerged. After that we all know who won the game.

Being saved his ass by his most hated son-in-law who turned out to be a handsome hero, King Samon changed his color and accepted the couple back to the palace and set a grand wedding.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-07-jpg

God Indra came to appear in Pra Sung’s father, King Yodsawimon,’s dream what had happened. The King set out to find his wife Queen Chantaywee. After finding her, they went further to Samon kingdom after the rumor that their son was there getting married to a princess.

Queen Chantaywee disguised herself as a cook and sneaked inside the palace. In the kitchen, she cooked pumpkin and while chopping pumpkin into pieces, she carved the scenes of the missing story into each piece.

Pra Sung ate the food and read the story carved on the pieces and found out that his mother was alive and was here. They found each other and also his father, King Yodsawimon.

In the end, the family of three including Princess Rotchana, the in-law/wife, went back to their kingdom and Pra Sung took the throne after his parent passed away.

    Happy ending…

    (to be continued)

Well, I think the story is fun. In fact, we have tons of Thai folk tales and all of them are fanciful and imaginary.

I wonder why Disney Studio or else have never laid their eyes on ours just once. They always focus on stories that are well known to the world. I think what’s the fun seeing a movie that we all know the story from the beginning all through to the end, like “Little Mermaid”, “Snow White” and etc.

If I say “Let’s see “Sung Tong””. The listeners surely get question marks on their faces. “What’s the story about?”. One thing leads to another and then they all go to see it.

In fact, there are many more stories and characters that show imagination far beyond limit such as “Sanonoi Roen Ngam” tells the story of a girl who was born with a small wooden hut attached in a lock of her hair (what!?!). The hut’s size grew as the girl grew into an adult.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-08-jpg
    Or…

“Kaew Na Ma” tells the story of an angel who was cursed and got her ass kicked from heaven down to earth. She became a woman with the face of a horse (What the f--k! How could she get laid then? Would the Minotaur consider this task? Well, the story awaits you to find out).

Memory Lane (In my own language)-03-jpg
    Or…

“Utai Taywee” tells the story of a princess of a naga king sneaking out to have sex with a male angel who lived in a tree (My God!! Is there a clip on Youtube?).

The princess naga got pregnant and laid an egg.

During the egg being hatched, a toad came by and ate something from the egg not knowing that the mother, princess naga, spitted poison covering the egg for protection.

So, the toad died like a dead duck while the little girl came out from the egg.

Seeing a dead toad first thing in the world, the girl thought that this was her mother. So, she lived with her mother a dead toad (5 f--k emoji!!) until.….

Why does it have to be Disney? They mainly do western related tales.
Thailand have a couple of movie companies who could do this and there is one company famous for trading movies who surely could find customers for this outside of Thailand. Asking for a foreign company to make a movie of this tale is like asking Monsanto to come here and grow rice..

I might say we lack almost everything such as sufficient skills, technology, credibility, marketing and etc. especially enough money to make a movie with good quality...

Many years ago, my buddy and I were forced to spend a lot of time hanging out in the massage parlour attached to our hotel in a major Isan city. The girls took to calling him "Khun Chang" and I was "Khun Pan" - I think these may have also been Sunthorn Poo characters.

I don't know the story, but I assume they were a couple of idiots if we were awarded the sobriquets.

I don't know the story, but I assume they were a couple of idiots if we were awarded the sobriquets.

That is another ancient tale dated back in the middle of the Ayuthaya kingdom. This tale was carried on as 'mouth to mouth' form and finally penned the whole story by Soontorn Poo in the reign of King Rama II in form of a very long poem (we called "sae-pa") with wonderful rhymes. If you could read Thai, you would feel the beauty in each line.

Back in the old days when I was in school, don't know now, the Ministry of Education put some parts from this poem in our lesson to memorize and do the exam.

The story is kind of a "saga", telling the lives of two families; Khun Pan's and Khun Chang's. Those two were rivalries.

Memory Lane (In my own language)-00-jpg

Khun Pan was a very handsome man. He likes adventures and black arts. That made him conquered every women he desired. Let's say troubles went along with him. He was not a bad man but he, kind of, was that way.

Khun Chang was fat and bald so everyone considered him ugly. He was kind of envy Khun Pan in every way. The only thing that made him above Khun Pan is he was rich.

Because Khun Pan was adventurous so, his story was much more than Khun Chang's. Everyone can add any kind of adventures to his story so, no one knows the original story of his adventures.

So, the term Khun Pan represents a handsome man who always flirts with women (in Thai we call "chao-choo". what do you call in English??). Everywhere he goes, he scores one, kind of.

The term Khun Chang represents "ugly but rich".

Those girls called you Khun Pan so, they considered you handsome and flirting. They called your friend Khun Chang so, they considered him bald but loaded.

    Was that so??

Khun Chang exactly fit the description of being fat, bald and loaded. As for myself, I did flirt quite a bit as I was broke, and thought that was my best chance of getting laid. Unfortunately it seldom worked with professional ladies.

“Wan (= day) Seang (= sound) Puen-Tak (= fired guns)”

The first attack of the Communist Party of Thailand led by Vietnamese’ “Sahai Sung (alias)” in Nakorn Panom Province on August 7th, 1965 which began the official Communism’s intervention targeting on academic students that led to the great riots in 1973 and 1976.

Ploenchit arcade, a very short live arcade, used to be the center of modern fashion in that era. I can't find any records telling when exactly this arcade started the business just knowing that it existed during the year 1972-1977. Some people talked about the bar "Disco Fever".

The place used to be located near the nowadays BTS's Ploenchit station.

Let me talk more for the last time about this topic before you get bored. Actually there is one more character from this tale whose name has been used as a metaphor.

The name is "Wan Tong". It is the name of the female leading character. Story goes shortly like this...

Wan Tong attracted both Khun Pan and Khun Chang. You can guess who won her. It's Khun Pan but Khun Chang did not let it go. He tried everything to get her even though Wan Tong already had a husband. Finally, he faked news that Khun Pan while going out to war, got killed in the battlefield.

He did more tricks and finally won Wan Tong.

Khun Pan came back from the war and knew the news. He went out to snatch his wife back from Khun Chang.

This tug-of-war ended up before the King. The King, finally, asked Wan Tong whom she really wanted to be with.

I don't know what happened to that bitch's brain but Wan Tong was reluctant and that made the King pissed.

The King shouted "Your behavior is disgraceful. It sets a bad example for other decent women. Your conviction is execution".

So. Wan Tong was dead because of her being a "Torn between two lovers" person.

Now, if you hear someone mention a woman as "She is (a) Wan Tong", it means this woman is a slut.

The end of "Thai metaphore" 101

That Ploenchit Arcade was right next to the British embassy as well. It contained a Foodland supermarket that was well stocked. Back then there was not much western food here in BKK so you could go in and stock up. Also had a bulletin board, some may not even know what one is. But travellers would leave messages back in the day. Dave, I have left BKK and taken the train to Penang, will be staying in the New China Hotel. Crew wanted for sailboat going Pattaya to Hua Hin on Wednesday next week. Then on down to Songkla. I need to sell my ticket to New Zealand for sale cheap and the airline will do a name change.

No internet, so this was really how you could catch up on what was going on.. The really good old days. If you needed up to date news you could go to the Oriental and read the wire off their teletype machine.. The only way to call long distance was from the GPO down on New Road.

When I was young living in the old capital city of Thailand, Thonburi, finding a dime in the street is easier than finding a farang!

    Wow, love it!

    Thanks for sharing...

The Ploenchit arcade right next to the embassy was before my time, though.

Was it on the Central Chitlom side?
    Yes, it was.
